METAIRIE, La. - One philosophy football coaches like to preach is the offense needs to run the ball to set up the pass. New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, though, is anything but conventional.
Neither is the Saints' huge statistical disparity between the run and the pass.
Running back Deuce McAllister has only 207 yards on the ground during the last five games, when the Saints are 2-3. McAllister is averaging 4.3 yards per carry this year and has seven touchdowns.
The yards per carry would make any coach more than happy. But McAllister carried the ball only 57 times through the five-game stretch.
