After beating San Francisco 41-23 to reach 4-4 despite an 0-3 start, they will have another chance to deviate from that history when they entertain defending Super Bowl champion Denver (6-3) on Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

New Orleans leveled its record quickly after beginning 0-4 (2007), 0-4 (2012), 1-3 (2014) and 1-4 (2015). Yet not once in those years did the Saints get above. 500.

“I don’t know that you point specifically to, hey, we’ve got to get over .500,” Payton said Monday in a conference call. “We point specifically to we’re playing Denver, here’s a team that just won the Super Bowl and this is what they do well and here are the things we have to do well. It’s hard to compare this team to, say, ’07.”
