Saints Offense vs. Jets Defense: What to Expect

by Saintsational on Oct 1, 2009

Part of the process for NFL teams to prepare for their upcoming game each week is to watch film on their next opponent. The more recent the better. In fact, the Saints are probably checking out footage of New York's last game against the Titans right now as we speak. Since we don't have access to all the latest game tape necessary to do our own scouting, I've resorted to Plan B: Chat with the blogger of the Jets last opponent in an effort to better understand what the Saints can expect.. This week that happens to be superstar blogger Jimmy from the Titans blog, Music City Miracles. On Sunday, the Titans lost to the Jets by a score of 24-17.

Bringing the Blitz

The main attraction in this weeks game will most certainly be the Saints number one ranked offense vs. the Jets third ranked defense so naturally, it was the focus of our discussion. The Jets have one of, if not the best, defenses in the league courtesy of new head coach Rex Ryan. Quite the interesting matchup against Drew Brees and his arsenal of weapons. So what did the Jets do last week to shut down the Titans offense?

The Eagles were also the #3 defense in the NFL when we faced them. Just an FYI :)

I actually believe that the matchup of the Jets O versus the Saints D will be just as interesting to follow. If the Jets move the ball, convert 3rd downs, and score while keeping Brees and Co. off the field, then it will be a long day for the Saints. If our D can hold the Jets O...in similar fashion as the Bills...then we can avoid that feeling of having to hold serve and score on each possession. Our offense seems to perform according to momentum.

One consistent feature of past high-powered Saints offenses (yes, even 2006) is that pressure tends to discombobulate Brees and Company. We even saw this effect versus Buffalo last week. They came out blazing and scored...then moved the ball down the field again...only to shoot themselves in the foot with penalties and a failed 4th down conversion. After that, we lost momentum and the offense went numb for 2 quarters.

It seems the our offense is boom or bust. And when we get behind, the offense and our coach tends to press...which often results in turnovers or 3-and-outs and momentum for the opposite team.

This team seems different, although it did disturb me to see them go dormant in the 2nd and 3rd against Buffalo last week. The perfect elixir for this condition is a good running game. If we can run against the Jets, this game should be much easier. If we cannot run...or Coach loses patience with the run...we could be in for another one of those long days where we just get steamrolled by a great smashmouth pressure defense.
