When New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton decided to make the change at defensive coordinator within the first 72 hours of being reinstated by the NFL after his one-year exile, most of us thought the obvious choice for a defensive coordinator would be former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel.
The 65-year-old Crennel had a long history of being one of the league’s top defensive minds and despite not having great success as a head coach, he was certainly considered a brilliant teacher of the 3-4 defense, one of the top defensive coordinators in the game, and he has close ties to Payton’s closest friend in the NFL — Pro Football Hall of Fame head coach Bill Parcells.
But Crennel’s contract with the Chiefs forces the team to pay him $3.2 million a season for the next two years if he doesn’t coach a play.
With that in mind everyone was taken back for a moment when word spread that former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan had emerged as the clear front-runner for the job earlier last week and on Saturday Ryan landed the new defensive coordinator position with the Saints.
