Saints release DT Taylor Stallworth (1 Viewer)

I'm surprised by this move. Either they are bringing up a WR or bringing on a 4th QB for the next six weeks. The timing with Drew's surgery announcement isn't coincidental.

Tuesday is a common day for roster moves - my guess it is coincidental.

Drew was out either way.

Yeah, I don't even really count him as a receiver at this point. He's pretty clearly a specialist who earned that roster spot by being that good on ST.

He is credited with a reception last week...for -7 yards :covri:

He did have 3 receptions in preseason, but nothing that stands out.

So we’re going to Seattle with only 1 true NT on the roster? Guess we’re about to see a lot of NASCAR package this week to try and keep Wilson in the pocket.

Brown, Tuttle, Onyemata, and Rankins are DTs on the roster. It’s possible this means Rankins is expected to play.

Rankins has been practicing for weeks, so maybe he's ready.

I'd have to think that this move is being made to sign a QB though. We absolutely must sign one, especially if we're intent on Taysom playing all over the place.

The jet sweep he ran in preseason for 9 yards stood out to me the most. TLL always went for negative to one yard gain at most.

I think Taysom will be doing a lot more playing QB than playing all over the place, even with TB as the starter. Since he showed he can stand tall in the pocket and go through his reads in preseason, he doesn't necessarily have to be a gimmick QB, which would make defenses have to guess on what kind of play would be run with him under center. I mean, he got 6% of the QB snaps with Drew at QB. I don't see why they wouldn't increase that closer to at least 20 with TB taking over. His plays were usually a success.

ETA: If one of them were to get hurt in a game, then the other plays the rest of the game and sign a QB at that point since that QB who's left would become the starter anyway.

ETA Part Two: Looks like I was totally wrong since they signed Barrett. Makes sense since he spent all preseason with Seattle too though. And he knows the system, so if TB or TH gets hurt, he'd be the backup for a few games until Drew comes back.

Probably bringing up a TE since T.Hill is the primary backup QB, that and Tuttle may be this years UDFA DT standout....until next year.

They are, but Brown is the only one that’s a NT by trade. The rest mostly play 3-tech and/or have very limited snaps at 1-tech. Rankins has played some NT (the packages where we see him and Onyemata in together) and he’s the only one that I really trust in both roles; Onyemata I’m iffy on at NT, but I think he can do it in a limited fashion.

So hopefully Rankins is indeed ready to rock if we’re this confident in letting Stallworth go.

Sorry to see him waved hopefully we can retain him for the practice squad. He did regress this year surprisingly.

Interesting move. And a bit surprising. I thought he was a bit of a fixture there. Has to be Rankins is coming back and ready. I do not think you let go a DT to bring on a WR from the PS.
