With starter Ernie Conwell ruled out of Sunday's game against the Steelers because of knee surgery and third-stringer Nate Lawrie missing practice time with a back problem, the Saints signed tight end John Owens to the 53-man roster on Wednesday.

Saints coach Sean Payton was down to two tight ends in Mark Campbell and Billy Miller, so adding another player at the position was a necessity for his offense and the scout team as well.

Owens is a four-year veteran who played with the Detroit Lions from 2002-03 and Chicago Bears in 2004.
