Saints showing interest in Vaughn Martin (merged) (1 Viewer)

If the Saints bring this guy in to really be a DT in their new scheme, that should tell you something about the defense they plan to set up. My guess is that they want him to be a 5tech DE/1tech DT and play multiple positions on the line.

I think that we need a solid 3-technique...so if he fits the bill...sure. I honestly haven't ever watched the guy play.

This is what PFF says:

RUMOR! Jason La Canfora reports that San Diego are hoping to re-sign Vaughn Martin, but rather inexplicably they face stiff competition from Philadelphia, Detroit, New Orleans and New England. We say inexplicably because outside of the occasional game here or there, Martin has constantly graded as one of the worst 3-4 defensive ends in the league. His -12.8 grade from last year was the second lowest of all his peers.

Vaughn Johnson, you silly boyz! The meanest, baddest, least famous, most-likely-to-slobberknock-ya LB to ever wear the B&G...but STILL my all-time favorite Saint!!!

He is about 1.3 X the player Johnson looking at his weight stat. 240# versus 300#

I just love the way this story opens...

"We have all heard of the small school prospect. Perhaps a player like Marques Colston will emerge from a school like Hofstra..."

Saints show interest in Vaughn Martin of chargers

Report: Chargers want to keep Vaughn Martin | ProFootballTalk

According to La Canfora, the Chargers will have a fair amount of competition for Martin’s services. The Eagles, Saints, Lions and Patriots are also believed to be interested in adding him to their defensive line rotations. All of those teams play out of a 3-4 base except for the Lions and Martin’s experienced in that look after his run with the Chargers.

Bio
Vaughn (6-4, 308) is a four-year defensive end/tackle in his fourth year with the Chargers.

Vaughn Martin’s rapid rise from the Canadian college ranks to becoming a premier NFL lineman took a major step forward in 2011 when he started 15 games at left defensive end. Originally expected to be a regular in the line’s rotation, Martin quickly moved into the starting lineup when Luis Castillo suffered a fractured left tibia just minutes into the season’s opening game against Minnesota. Martin started the Chargers’ final 15 games and posted a career-best 49 tackles, second among defensive linemen. Martin is a native of Lucea, Jamaica where he grew up playing cricket and soccer. When Martin was nine, his mother, Doreen, married a man who lived in Toronto and Martin and his mother moved to Canada. They lived in Toronto and then London, Ontario, which is where Martin learned to play hockey and football. He began playing high school football in the 10th grade and played just two collegiate seasons. In between, he played two seasons of summer ball in the Central Ontario Football League and played for Team Canada at the 2006 NFL Global Championships, where Team Canada went 5-0 and posted five shutouts while Martin was named to the All-Tournament Team. After high school, Martin spent a year at the Milford Prep School in New York. He was ticketed to attend Michigan State after prep school, but a mixup over his transcripts prevented him from becoming a Spartan. Instead Martin enrolled at Western Ontario, where as a freshman he led the Mustangs a conference title and Canada’s collegiate national championship football game. Martin applied for the NFL Draft despite having three seasons of college eligibility remaining, and he became the first Canadian underclassman to get drafted by an NFL team. Martin played defensive end and tackle at Western Ontario, and played fullback in the team’s short-yardage offense. Martin was one of the most intelligent players to emerge from the 2009 NFL Draft, scoring a 38 on the league’s Wonderlic Test.
