Saints sign Bobby McCray (1 Viewer)

:worthy: I like this signing. These days every productive 4-3 defense needs a edge pass rusher look at the Giants.

Bingo! Last year, the Giants protected a relatively weak secondary by mounting a ferocious pass rush with a stable of cat-quick DEs. We have definitely improved the defensive side of the ball with Vilma, Gay, and McCray. Great job, Loomis!

I did not read the whole thread and don't know if this has been said already but I think/hope this will motivate Will Smith to become a better DE.

Good news! This is just what the Saints needed, a pass rush specialist for the obvious passing downs. Now, QBs can't sit in the pocket on 3rd and 27 and wait for a hole to develop in the zone, or Jason David to get beat.

Yes, I like this view of the addition. I could not stand seeing the Saints give up 3rd and longs over and over again. Nice move.

I think you will see a more fit Will Smith and Charles Grant. Orgeron has already said he likes quicker, faster DLs who know how to get up field. He likes guys who play with discipline and are in good shape. Smith at 272 is a terror. I think Smith can be just as solid off the edge as Osi Umeniyora. People sometimes forget that when Smith came out of tOSU, he ran a faster 40 time than Chris Gamble. I think Smith ran in the 4.5 range. And you saw that speed off the edge his rookie season when he tied for the league lead in forced fumbles with 6.

I think the signing of McCray is a solid signing. This is such a copycat league and I think the Saints are able to see the effectiveness of the Giants and want to mimic that to some extent. My only worry is getting an extension done with Smith. I hope that this signing does not prevent us from getting a deal done with him. It certainly provides insurance but should not keep Smith from getting a new deal.

The one area we improved upon significantly from 2006 on defense was stopping the run (at least for the first 12 games or so). I think this might be partly due to Grant and Smith bulking up. However this left the QB with tons of time and no pressure even when we blitzed. Hopefully we will find the right balance now on D. If we can get one of the big guys in the middle and then have Grant and Smith lose a little weight, maybe 3rd sting QBs won't look like Marino out there against us.

Now if Gibbs will just decide to blitz, our corners won't be under so much pressure. If the D improves, I can only hope the offensive line will hold up so Brees and Co can make some plays.

An interesting take out of Dallas on the Saints signing of McCray....this guy calls it "the Giants effect":

Some people looked at the Saints' signing of Bobby McCray today, and did some head-scratching. New Orleans, after all, already has two pretty good defensive ends on board, in Charles Grant and Will Smith. And to be the third guy, McCray was paid handsomely, with a reported total of $20 million coming over the next five years.

Call this "The Giants Effect". And watch that video and assess how much of New York's highlight package features Tom Brady getting hit.

A couple years back, the Giants already had Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck on board, yet they spent a first-round pick on Boston College DE Mathias Kiwanuka. What happened? The Giants found ways to get all four ends on the field at once -- using Kiwanuka as a Sam linebacker in their base defense, and running a four-end line out there in sub packages -- and wound up, even after Kiwanuka was lost for the season, having the best pass rush in football.

They rode that all the way to a championship. Having three high-end edge rushers in the Super Bowl allowed the Giants to move Tuck to a 3-technique tackle, and create mismatches on guards. He wreaked havoc, toying with All-Pro Logan Mankins, who had all kinds of issues matching up .

It all starts up front, this is a great piece of news. Now we can expect a good D-line rotation. If we can get a monster DT, we may be able to get teams in 3rd and long so we can actually USE our DEs. :) (Vilma should help that as well)

Now if Gibbs will just decide to blitz, our corners won't be under so much pressure. If the D improves, I can only hope the offensive line will hold up so Brees and Co can make some plays.

This signing is actually about not having to blitz.
