Saints still concerned about offensive line after loss to Pittsburgh Steelers

By Nick Underhill -- Advocate

If the third game of the preseason truly is a dress rehearsal, then the Saints came out in a tattered suit and walked into halftime with the rest of the fabric shredded to the ground.

There weren’t many redeeming moments during the first half action during Friday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. A defense that has bred confidence throughout the summer gave up a touchdown on the first drive of the game and then was beaten on a 57-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Brown on the second drive.

It wasn’t much better offensively. Drew Brees struggled to find targets down the field and was often forced to check down. The team’s scoring drive with the starters on the field felt more like a grind than one of the league’s high-powered offenses dictating the action.

The major concern on offense after last week’s game against the Houston Texans centered on an offensive line that left the quarterbacks rattled and failed to open up holes for the running backs. Depending on how you measure things, the line was slightly better against the Steelers, but not good enough to alleviate concerns.

This pretty much sums it up. With a week of preseason left, something has to happen. There's no way they can look at the offensive (very accurate term) line and think, "We can go 16 games with this".

I really wish we could see Landon Turner get some run with the ones. I realize that he's a rookie UDFA and that he's been playing almost exclusively against backups, but he has looked like the best pure guard on our team, IMO. He definitely has a NFL guard body and strength, as he's regularly just bulldozing defensive linemen in the run game and he's looked a lot better in pass protection than I expected. I think he and Peat should be the starting guards. Let them take their lumps and progress together.

Lelito just is what he is. I think he's reached his ceiling and he's just not that good. Doubt any changes are made though, to be honest.

What? Where is the false hope and the positive spin some of you people live by? Welcome to reality.

There has got to be a happy medium between "its the end of the world" and "There is nothing to worry about"

I wish people would stop going to either extreme. Yes, it is obviously a real concern. But during the preseason the coaches are not going to be scheming around it right now. Once the real games happen they will find a way to make due with our deficiencies.

LOL. Ok.

And the defenses aren't scheming either. If they are getting beat bad head-to-head then what on earth do you think is going to happen when defenses stop going vanilla?

No way I'd extend Brees before the season starts because honestly I'm not confident he'd make it through the season behind the current line.

Thats a fair point. I just refuse to believe that after seeing this they arent going to do something to adjust.

Because you are living in a world of denial. All I can do is laugh at you and move on.

Denying what? just because i'm not in full blown panic mode?

I know the line is an issue but you come across the type that thinks we are going to win 3 games because of it. I dont.

The killer part is when they dont go 3-13 you'll probably come back and deny it.

I think they are a 7-9 or 8-8 team.

I thought they definitely played better, except for the LT position. Hill is garbage, Peat Future is definitely at RG he looks much better and more comfortable. They need to get Armstead healthy though if this line is gonna function.

6-10 and Im being nice.

The killer part is, when Im right, I wont come here and rub your nose in it.
