When a team loses key players, the team with BETTER COACHING has the "next man up" ready to step in. As a matter of fact, many of us already know that we've had 2nd string players step up big time for the Saints.
Let's look at Super Bowl winners since the Saints' first playoff season (1987)... I didn't want to go back any further than that. I think 32 seasons is a big enough sample:
Let's look at the past SB winners (since 1987)that "laid an egg or two" on the way to capturing the Lombardi trophy:
1988 (49'ers): Lost 16-38 (Rams); Lost 3-9 (Raiders); Lost 17-34 (Falclowns)
1990 (Giants): Lost 13-31 (@Eagles); Lost 3-7 (@49ers)
1992 (Cowboys): Lost 7-31 (Eagles)
1993 (Cowboys): Lost 16-35 (@Redskins); Lost 14-27 (@Falclowns)
1994 (49ers): Lost 8-40 (Eagles)
1995 (Cowboys): Lost 20-38 (49ers)
1996 (Packers): Lost 6-21 (@Cowboys)
1997 (Broncos): Lost 17-34 (@49ers)
1998 (Broncos): Lost 21-31 (@Dolphins)
2000 (Ravens): Lost 9-16 (Dolphins); Lost 3-10 (@Redskins); Lost 6-14 (@titans; Lost 6-9 (Steelers)
2001 (Patriots): Lost 10-30 (Dolphins)
2002 (Buccaneers): Lost 7-17 (Steelers) Note: Were swept twice by the Saints
2003 (Patriots): Lost 0-31 (@Bills)
2004 (Patriots): Lost 20-34 (@Steelers)
2005 (Steelers): Lost 7-26 (@Colts)
2006 (Colts): Lost 17-44 (@Jaguars)
2007 (Giants): Lost 13-35 (Packers); Lost 20-31 (Cowboys); Lost 10-22 (Redskins)
2008 (Steelers): Lost 6-15 (Eagles); Lost 14-31 (Titans)
2009 (Saints): Lost 10-23 (@Panthers)
2010 (Packers): Lost 3-7 (@Lions)
2011 (Giants): Lost 14-28 (Redskins); Lost 25-36 (Seahawks); Lost 24-49 (Saints had 577 yds of offense)
2012: (Ravens): Lost 13-43 (Texans)
2014: (Patriots): Lost 20-33 (Dolphins); Lost 14-41 (Chiefs); Lost 9-17 (Bills)
2015: (Broncos): Lost 13-29 (Chiefs)
2016: (Patriots): Lost 0-16 (Bills)
2017: (Eagles): Lost 10-24 (Seahawks); Lost 0-6 (Cowboys -- in Wk 17)
2018: (Patriots): Lost 20-31 (Jaguars); Lost 10-26 (@Lions); Lost 10-34 (@titans)
I. Three of every four SB winners since 1987 have had at least one (1) double-digit loss in their regular season. Three of the past 32 SB winners were shut out once in the season.
II. 40% of the past 32 SB winners (24 of 32) had at least one game where they scored less than 10 points. Note: The mighty 2000 Ravens (with that awesome defense) had an almost inept offense that was held to <10 points four times in the regular season.
Bottom line: Yes, we've had devastating injuries. But again, the teams that bounce back are the ones who have great positional coaches that have the 2nd & 3rd string ready to step in as "next-man-up."
We've got a great group of assistant coaches, especially D-line (Ryan Nielsen) and Linebackers (Mike Nolan).
I like our chances.
Can I get a "WHO DAT"?!?!?!?!
