Saints this years Minnesota Viking? (1 Viewer)

So I don't listen to a ton of sport media but I do enjoy Extra Point Taken over at the Ringer's NFL podcast. I like Sheil and Ben, just find them fun to listen to, but I also enjoy football from a more nerd/statistical/analytical point of view.

Today on there Friday show Sheil was predicting the Saints to beat Green Bay. They both like are defense but are little sheepish on the offense. During the segment he said the Saint's will be like the '22 Viking. Beat bad teams, on an easy schedule, but no one will really take us serious. Basically we could end the season with 12+ wins, but no one will put us in the same league as Dallas, 49'ers, Philly.

The more I though about the more I though it might be a fair assessment. It's early and things can change but I can't see us beating Dallas or the 49'ers. While Philly would be closer I still think we're the underdogs.

So what say you Saint's Report, is this teams ceiling a decent record and Division win, only to be one and done in the playoffs? Do you really believe that we can beat the elite teams? I am not there yet but I am starting to feel like this has the potential to be a special season, when you hear these players talk you can tell that they believe they can beat anyone. I really excited about this Sunday's game. If we can get this offense to be just a tad more efficient we might be able shock some people.
it definitely has that feeling, but i'm confident that not so much. people are still sleeping on carr.

We played 2 games, the Titans are a good team, the Panthers have a good D. I guess after two games what makes you think we’ve played an easy schedule. Nobody knows who is good or bad or who has an easy schedule. I bet everyone that’s played the saints in 06 had us marked as a win.

Point is the saints have an easy schedule based on the records of teams last year and that’s a horrible way too gauge it.

We are 2 - 0 and I think we can beat anyone in the league this year. We have a short preseason, Carr played one series and MY hasn’t played in 3 years.

we could beat the cowboys and niners handily, and they still wouldn't put us in the same category. I don't worry too much about what people say any more.

It seems people forgot we lost to the 49ers last year and they only scored 13 points. Not exactly a drubbing by them. Then we beat the Eagles by holding them to 10 points. Granted it was Gardner Minshew but that same Minshew lead team put up 35 on the Cowboys the previous week.

Difference between us and Minnesota is that we have an actual defense. Also to note, for as many wins the Vikings had they had a minus in point differential. That means they got blown out in their losses. I don't see us getting blown by anyone with our D.

In my opinion it's a futile exercise to try to crown teams or put a comparison on teams with having played less than 12% of the season. I wouldn't yet crown the 49ers or Cowboys in September. Too much football left and too many injuries will occur to predict the cream of the NFC right now.

And weren't the Cowboys the cream of the NFC in September of 2019 until they played the Saints on their 4th game and lost 10-12?

I would never label the Saints as 2023's version of the 2022 Vikings. Or any past version of the Vikings. Lol

You guys falll for media hype train to much. Impressive wwins are not just about putting up 40 points against the worst teams in nfl let the jets and giants. They cowboys and 49er have had really easy starts to the season.
Nothing them teams have show says they are way better than us.
We do have some thing to clean up but the Saints are just as talented as those teams.

We have a top 3-5 defense right now. We can most definitely win a Super Bowl with this team, we just need the ball to bounce our way.

This is the exception that proves the rule, but the Saints were the best team in the NFL after Week 2 in 2009 and never looked back.

We were charmed that year for certain. We had two CBs come in off the street to start against the Pats I believe it was and kicked their tails in the Dome. Tom Brady and BB were like "no mas" and threw in the towel. Lol

Care to elaborate. We won a close game in Week 1 and then made the Week 2 game against a lesser team harder then it needed to be.

I am overall excited about the year, but just have not seen enough to make me think we can beat the really elite teams. If we played Dallas this Sunday, Carr might leave the stadium in a body bag.
Im not saying I disagree with what you're saying. Just the thought of us being anything like the Vikings is revolting.

I have no qualms with their initial assessment.

That narrative was set as soon as you look at our schedule. There is no way we get much respect this year regardless of our record (from a national media perspective). I'm not complaining, it just is what it is.

If we are good enough to compete with top teams is another story. Right now, no way, this offense is very much a wip. I don't think this is the Vikings though.

The Vikings were a type of team that hit their ceiling and it wasn't quite good enough. I think our ceiling is much higher, and that stems from the defense. If the o-line can get its act together and play to its potential I think this offense can be as good as the 22 Vikings (top 10ish). This defense is already much better than the Vikings had last year.

Our potential overall is much higher imo. Just gotta see if we hit our stride at the right time.

The only thing I will say is that I’ve seen us be world beaters and lose in 1 or 2 games in previous playoffs

. The goal is win that division and/or get into the playoffs, from there, let it ride!

Until we go into a game like Vikings and get blown like Dallas did to them last year, I’m not comparing them.

We in the middle of slugging out tough wins while we find our feet in offence.

Let em compare. History will tell the story, right now we make that history.

Obviously we’ll happily take a division title. And sure, the schedule may play a part in that.

But the Vikings defense never really came around. I’m hoping that our offense (looking at you, OLine) does.

If we do that, we may go in like the 2022 Vikings. But there’s no reason we couldn’t finish like the 2020 Bucs.

Anything can happen in a season. Never know what happens to other teams injury wise.

But you are spot on, this is a season the Saints can build on. It feels like 2017 season and the 2006 one.

Both those years there was a lot of very young talent on the roster.

I do think however now we are better than Dallas. Dallas is going to be forced to expose Dak now. Without a great defense and a good ground game Dak is very vulnerable. I don't think thier current RB is a true RB1, he's more like a change of pace back.

I do think the Trevon Diggs injury will be big for Dallas, but I am not sure I would say there defense is bad. They still might have the best Dline in the league. Micah Parson is a freak of nature. The Saints Oline needs massive improvement if we face them in the playoffs.

I do agree about Dak though. I don't trust him in the playoffs, but Carr has a lot to prove as well.
