Saints to hire Bo Davis as defensive line coach (67 Viewers)

His resume clearly indicates that he wasn't a lifer to any organization. The longest he stay on any staff is like 3 years

I don't know why people thought that a coach he stole from Detroit to Texas to LSU wasn't going to get stolen from us

I think people are just used to assistants staying forever in the college game and after how terrible the LSU defense had gotten, are panicking about losing a guy who was supposed to help fix it.

But, I think this is kind of Kelly's M.O. He seems like a guy that tends to churn assistants with some of the guys from ND not following him and others going back. Saban did the same thing at least early in his career.

The super late coaching hire is probably why the Saints felt they had to poach LSU because all of the good DLine coaches are taken. It’s also why we’re hiring so many college coaches in general, imo.

There are always good NFL position coaches available. Too much gets made of this.

I think we are going to the college ranks intentionally as a strategy. The NFL game is evolving into favoring a more college style of offense.

What better way to counter this than to hire guys familiar with the things we are now starting to see almost every Sunday nowadays?

They need to find a way to poach Eric Henderson from USC. He's a Louisiana native from NOLA. He did excellent things for USC D line.

Gonna get tougher to retain college coaches when they have to go on the road and recruit during bye weeks during a season. Have to spend an inordinate amount of time traveling to meet recruits only to get outbid by an extravagant NIL deal at the 11th hour on the eve of a signing day. More college coaches looking at jumping or retiring.

Kind of. Blake Baker's base is a 4-2-5 but he does a lot of the stuff with one of the DEs standing up on the LoS. Baker does all kinds of weird stuff. I've seen him do 2 DL with 4 LBs stacked who then break out just prior to the snap.
I’m thinking more along the lines of what will be our most common alignment. Also, if one or both edges stand up, with four guys on the LOS and two LB’s behind them, I would consider it a 4-2-5 alignment.

He's been coaching for 30 years and he was just at LSU for last year. I'm sure he's done it all.
I agree, my main point is that all three coaches hired come from teams that played a lot of four man fronts last year. Beyond that, I found out today that Moore said a 4-2-5 alignment was likely.

One thing to keep in mind is while he may use an "even" front, he also had Swinson who is 6'4' 250lbs in his front which is much more in line with a 3-4 Jack than a 4-3 End.
Never said we had to use 4-3 ends, I’m talking about the alignment we will use. We can play lighter edges with run stuffing DT’s if we get the guys. We may be in 2-4-5 personnel, but the alignment will be 4-2-5.

Yeah, I think we will see some 2-4-5 and 3-3-5, but you are probably right that we will see more 4-2-5 alignment with run stuffing DTs to compensate for a lighter Edge on one side and/or having the DEs on the line standing up. I think Baker used Swinson most of the time as the light Edge with his hand on the ground, but I think he did sometimes have him standing up. And I will be excited to see some of those 240 to 245 Lbs. Edges finally put to use by the Saints.

I tend to think of the 4-2-5 with the Edges standing on the LoS as a 2-4-5 mostly due to the positions of the guys on the Edge being LBs and the fact that they do sometimes drop into coverage, but you may be right that it really should be considered a 4-2-5.

This is my thought as well. Love to see it.

Well, reading through the post, lots of good comments. Speaking Ole Timer perspective here. Back in the day, a majority of college coaches dreamed of getting to the NFL. Then, some couldn't handle the egos of these grown men making more than them salary wise, and returned to the college ranks. Now fast fwd to almost 40 yrs later (told ya Ole Timer), In today's college ranks, you have coaches DYING to go to the NFL due to a major change at the college level>>N.I.L. These kids are placed like professionals even before playing at the college level, you don't think some of these kids have big egos, etc. Then you talk about chasing the recruit for several yrs, believing you can reel him in for your program after 2yrs sometimes more contact, only to have a recruit bail to another program because the CONTRACT is BIGGER. Its going to get harder and harder to recruit the kid who wants an education, wants so show off his talent with a big time program, to COLLEGE FREE AGENCY just like the NFL. Imagine the stress these college coaches are dealing with now.

He's had two coaching stints in as the DL coach with Saban at Alabama (plus 2 at LSU as a GA and S&C) so we know those defenses ran odd fronts.
