I think this is question could best be answered by Swimmer, but to me, bench works your pecs and triceps as well. When you are pushing off of someone, those are the main muscles are being used; along with others of course, your core and legs are going to come in to play as well.
Oh to be sure. A bench press isn't wholly not applicable. But I just know it gets a bit tougher to throw the bar up more when you've got long arms. I should know. My arms are about 35 inches long. It ain't easy for me.
