Sean Payton insisted his New Orleans Saints’ dismal effort Sunday against the Detroit Lions had nothing to do with last week’s 49-21 demolition of the Los Angeles Rams.

In one sense, he’s right. Against the Lions, the Saints looked nothing like the team that just seven days earlier seemed poised to break out of what is becoming its perennial 7-9 doldrums.

These Saints looked uninspired. They looked befuddled. They looked like a team whose tank was on empty instead of being energized to accept the challenge of beating a good (though hardly great) NFL division leader.

And that is on Payton, the coach, the man who shapes this franchise as he sees fit, for better or worse.

“I have to do a better job,” said Payton, showing refreshing candor. “Obviously, we looked sluggish.”
