In the Sean Payton era we have never been able to generate a pass rush. Even with all out exotic blitz scheme of Williams we struggled to get pressure.

im pretty sure we led the league in pressures under GW

not like pressures are a measurable statistic but there are some websites that like to throw it into their analysis

There's no reason to cut 2 guys that can help the team...especially if there are other alternatives

I love fans whining about salaries they don't have to pay

If the defense struggles, it's not because of guys like will smith and Vilma

Both of them fit this defense and both of them are leaders...the only people that really don't believe that are....saints fans. Interesting

Another brilliant post. Just glad we didn't use all that money to invest in a guy like Graham or Jordan because there is no way our defense could possibly improve without guys like Smith and Vilma.

AMARITE?

We wasted 1M on Vilma this year. Could've use that at least to rollover to next years cap and the Graham contract.

Same with Harper, Smith. Neither has contributed (except Harper for 2 games)

Coulda shoulda woulda. Bottom line is, we did Vilma right. Sure, we coulda cut Vilma and kicked him to the curb and saved a million. But instead we showed him respect and treated him like a human being who has been loyal to the organization for years. If we had to do it all over again, I hope we would do it the same way. JV Got the closure he was seeking for his fine career here with the Saints, and now he can retire with us and forever be a part of the Who Dat Nation. He is a hero to us all. 50 Years from now, we will be telling our grandkids about Jon Vilma calling the play in the Superbowl that sent Tracy Porter to the house.

JV you may never strap on the pads for the Saints ever again, but we will never forget the passion and loyalty and dedication you gave to the Black & Gold. Saint for life, JV51!!

Everyone wants to say Vilma was only $1 million but he also has other bonuses equaling $1.2 million for a total of $2.2 million. Smith could have saved us $4.15 million this season and $3.15 million next season. Releasing both would have saved a combined $9.5 million.

To put that in perspective, we could have signed Graham to a 5 year $45 million deal with $20 million bonus and backloaded the contract some until we get out of cap hell and that $9.5 million would have paid him the next two seasons until we were free of these big contracts and the cap actually increases.

I'm over it, the chapter and book are now closed on both players. Sad it ended this way because I'll always appreciate what both did for us, particularly in 2009. Hope we can keep Vilma around in some sort of coaching position. Just wish it didn't take up so much cap space to close the book.
