I just want to know, with Drew Brees signed now, where are we at with the the salary cap this year and next? What dead money is remaining for next year.

Also do we still have 5 running backs on the roster? I know about about the signings of Evans and Moore.

Sorry if it has been discussed already. I don't have time to read through all the other forums and speculations.

I don't know the exact numbers, but I'll try to help.

We currently have approximately $6 million in cap space. (I did read somewhere that it might actually be $12 million).

Next years current dead money is around $5 million. (Lewis and Browner).

We currently have 6 RBs: Ingram, Hightower, Spiller, Lasco, Murphey, and Cadet. However, Murphy is really just a ST specialist that can play RB in a pinch if needed.

Yes, we signed Evans and Sterling Moore. That should bring us back to 53.

According to overthecap.com we have just under $10 mil right now and just under $20 mil next year in cap room. Assuming we roll most of our cap space this year into next we'll have about $28 mil.

Edit: That is a thing right? Cap space rolls over to the next year?

Rolling the excess cap over? Yes. It's a thing. I just can't remember how much you're allowed to roll over.

Almost certain you can roll over as much as you want.

Additionally, we have a few salaries on the roster that I don't expect to make it next year, namely Strief (2.9m saved if cut) and Ellerbe (2.5m saved if cut). Byrd would save 8.3m with a June 1st designation cut. Even if these three stay on the team, wouldn't be surprised to see pay cuts from each.

We'll have a respectable amount of cap space next year to make deals.

The Saints are officially "flexible" now when it comes to cap space.

Things looking up and you want to trade for an OG? We have the space.
Everything goes well and you want to pick up a high priced pass rushing FA for 2017? We have the space.
Need a RG and RT next offseason and have to extend our own? We have the space.

Look for this young core to be resigned and kept together for the next 3 years or so, even if it costs just a tiny bit too much (because now there is space). Continuity of the overall roster should remain fairly constant and the pieces added the next two years will be with an eye towards a Brees Super Bowl, not so much rounding out a roster, youth, and depth (these we actually have now).

In short, the Saints are slowly moving towards being big contenders in '17 & '18
