San Diego to Ban Wal-Mart Supercenters

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The City Council here voted late Tuesday to ban certain giant retail stores, dealing a blow to Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s potential to expand in the nation's eighth-largest city.

The measure, approved on a 5-3 vote, prohibits stores of more than 90,000 square feet that use 10 percent of space to sell groceries and other merchandise that is not subject to sales tax. It takes aim at Wal-Mart Supercenter stores, which average 185,000 square feet and sell groceries.

Mayor Jerry Sanders will veto the ban if the Council reaffirms it on a second vote, which will likely happen in January, said mayoral spokesman Fred Sainz. The Council can override his veto with five votes.

"What the Council did tonight was social engineering, not good public policy," Sainz said.

So is wal mart evil?

Are they curbing inflation with thier cheap products or send American jobs overseas since they sell so many cheap chinese goods?

Is wal mart to blame or the people that shop at Wal Mart?

do we have responsibility as consumers or do we just blame corporation?



I must admit I acually went to wal mart the other day...

I was working on a home improvement project and time had gotten away from me, well it was 10:00 PM and no where else was open, and I knew Wal Mart would have what I needed, so I went, after standing in line to check out for 25 min, I regretted the decision.

Well if they get chicagoed (Wal Mart building a super center just over the city limits line) everyone will still go there, and San Diego will not get a dime of tax revenue from it.

I don't think they're evil. People want cheap prices, so they really don't care what and where they're buying as long as the prices are low. I don't buy meat from there. And if I still lived in Metairie, chances are I wouldn't shop there. But life goes on.

What I like about it is that in this case it's a LOCAL government, exercising SOVERIEGNTY to protect LOCAL business interests.

I don't mind it one bit.

And it's something those masquerading as "real" conservatives wouldn't understand.

I think the real question should be is Wal-Mart good for some parts of America, but maybe not others?

Reb, just a quick question to you: do you hate big business or is it some grudge you have agianst agianst some large corporations becuase you my friend are sounding a lot like a big time liberal. Proctecting local business interests? ***? How in the hell do you know what a real time business interest is unless you have really studied the impact it has on local economies?? OH I get it you are the type of people that make fun of people who go to Walmart, call them rednecks and swill of the lowest type. thats the perception some people buy into what they think of people like Walmart shoppers.

You know I think people like you should understand that this is free enterprise economy, not an economy run by brain dead and naive liberals.

I used to work at the place and by my own admittion, am not its biggest fan, but Reb you are wrong and a have a clear slanted view on what you think the notion of free market economy really is.

This kind of thing happens everyday to potential bars, strip clubs, liquor stores, manufacturers, etc. If the majority of people don't want a certain business in their area, the business usually doesn't win imo.

I consider myself a real conservative, and I do not like the move. I don't understand the hatred toward WalMarts...I really don't. They built a Super Walmart not too far from my house. I have been there several times, and I think it is just fine.

What true purpose is gained by excluding the 90,000+ square foot business that have 10% of their space dedicated to foods other than to stop Walmart from building? How many other stores satisfy that requirement. This is just a shot at Walmart. I don't like it when government acts against a specific business because they don't like it, which is what I think is going on here.

Yep. I don't think it's the place of government to restrict business unless there is a safety concern for the general public or monopolistic or anti-trust concerns that kill competition. WalMart doesn't fit either of those categories. The reality is anyone with funds can open a SuperCenter of some sort. K-Mart and Target tried to compete with WalMart in that arena but largely failed because they didn't do it as well. Someone else at some point will challenge them and if their better we'll see WalMart lose ground.

Oh, and I'm an avid WalMart shopper and I have saved so much time from it. With 5 kids and all the activities and shopping that goes with that it's a huge timesaver. Instead of spending the weekends running to 5 or 6 stores I hit one and I'm done. More time for the kiddies and my wifes honey-do list.
