I'm in the process of opening an account with them online. They are asking for my SS#. Is it safe to give it online or should I call and open an account over the phone?
It's safe as long as you have the correct web address (www.scottrade.com). I use online banking/investing all the time.
Just beware of any e-mails you get asking you to log in to any online accounts you have through a link in the e-mail. They may look convincing but no reputable company would ever ask you to do that. Many times, when you look at the URL in the link they provide, there's a subtle difference (i.e. ebayy.com, payppal.com, scottrade.net, etc.).
As long as you are sure you're at the correct website, you'll be OK. Giving out you SSN is not the most vulnerable information you'll give out online. If you open it over the phone, you'll still have to give out that information.
