Screw the politics - it's time to bench under performers (1 Viewer)

Extremely disappointed in Fleener today. He is being paid $7.2m per season. This isn't some developmental/situational role player contract. $7.2m/yr is instant impact player money.

Today, the Giants played a cover-2 shell with brackets on the outside receivers. This is Fleener's moment. This is why he was paid $7.2m/yr. To punish teams that do this. To break defenses that do this.

Fleener had 2 catches on 8 targets for 29 yards. Yikes.

Fleener was signed to be a playmaker. Fleener's per year average on his contract is more than Josh Hill's entire contract. More than Hoo-man's entire contract.

He was asked to deliver today, and he did not.

"Learning curves" and "grace periods" are for guys being paid like Brandon Coleman, not $7.2m/yr contracts.

The problem is not Cadet or Spiller or Fleener.
They are symptoms.

The problem is Sean Payton has yet to find two field stretching WRs like Devery and Meachem who were necessary to run the complete vertical threats this offense requires.

We've had several years to find guys who can do that and we haven't succeeded.

Cooks, while fast, is not a seam buster vertically.

Snead is a move the chains guy in the slot.

Thomas is a big body guy like Colston but he's doesn't have Devery or Meachem speed.

We've used Coleman in that role but he's too raw and not good enough.

Next year, in addition to getting more pass rush, Cbs, and OL help, we absolutely need to find a seem busting Devery/Meachem type. Even Joe Morgan did it when it wasn't on the booze.

Brees has to be able to air it out 4-5 times a game and make the defense respect. Our underneath game would be dominant if safeties werent always there to make the play.

Spiller was hurt and we were stupid to not give him more chances to become a part of the offense once he got healthy. We never even gave him a fair shot.

We shouldn't make that mistake again.

It must have been pretty bad because we gained nothing by cutting him this early. I'm sure Fleener will play better but I'm not sure he will ever live up to that contract like pretty much every fa Loomis and co sign...

Guess we saw it differently.

Looked like Drew was telling Cadet to flip his hands and catch it right.

It was this. He also looked at Fleener after dropping the same red zone in his hands pass he dropped last week. That is the difference between this team and the past.. No clutch Colston or Graham to keep the chains moving.

That's sickening. That's almost what Graham was making per year and Fleener can barely catch a ball.

Our free agency moves are demoralizing.

Coleman also needs a break because he made two flags in just one game and made a lot of incompletions

So cutting veterans like Lewis and Spiller wasn't doing the same thing?

Politics doesn't mean squat with Sean Payton. it's the reason a 7th round draft choice named Colston started....and a FA RB named Thomas became our best backfield weapon for so many years.

The problem here is an overall shortage of talent. Poor personnel management has caught up with this franchise....and it has been plaguing us for most of the past 4 seasons.

Payton needs to send a message that under performers will be benched. Fleener should be the first to ride the pine. Following Fleener should be Cadet.

When you continue to play under performers, you are sending a message to your team that you settle for mediocrity. Winners don't settle for mediocrity.

It's funny how many people don't agree that winners don't settle for mediocrity. They sure as hell don't. Two games, though, is not enough time. Let's give them a couple more games. Now, maybe the season will be over after a couple more games. Then, it will go back to a very bad personnel decision that forced the offense to try to feed an uninterested player the football to give him every chance to live up to his EXTREMELY HIGH SALARY. Damn, another one of those???

Maybe they should bench the underperforming coaches. Permanently.

I wanted us to sign mike Wallace with Fleeners money, think he would have fit the bill..,

it is worse than that when you factor in the dead cap that the saints were on the hook for after trading JG. So that + signing Fleener might actually be costing them more $$ than just keeping JG.
Or you could add the dead cap that year to the Unger contract, either way the saints paid a lot to trade JG.

Actually, it's lack of talent due to bad organizational decisions and injuries but most definitely compounded by a decline in quality of coaching performance week in week out.

It's the third year of this now where talent wise we are thin and need every edge but coaching decisions every other week are backfiring and providing the margin of loss. This year coaching and personnel misfires have featured in both losses and may be too much to overcome this year.

Despite everything we had chances to win these games but coaching did not make up the difference. We have the kicker decision and we have Fleener and Cadet and Colemand forced into the game plan and TO issues.
