Hasselbeck’s recovery from surgery ahead of schedule, team says

KIRKLAND - The Seattle Seahawks allowed former starting safety Ken Hamlin to leave in free agency Friday, but they hung onto veteran wide receiver Bobby Engram.
Hamlin, a Pro Bowl alternate at free safety last season, signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys.
He had three sacks and two interceptions for the Seahawks last year, a season in which he played all 16 games following life-threatening head injuries from a street fight in 2005. He was Seattle's second-round pick in 2003 and started 52 of 54 regular-season games he played in.
The Seahawks re-signed Engram to a multiyear contract even though they already have a stable of younger, richer receivers.
Team president Tim Ruskell said Friday that experience and Engram's rapport with wide receivers Darrell Jackson, Deion Branch and Nate Burleson, among others, were the main reasons the 34-year-old is coming back for a seventh season in Seattle.
