Sean Payton and Brandon Coleman agree that the receiver could have had a better game against Houston

By Nick Underhill -- Advocate

HOUSTON -- Sean Payton expects more from Brandon Coleman.

The Saints coach watched the wide receiver drop a few passes during Saturday’s loss to the Houston Texans, and he let it be known that he expects a better effort from Coleman.

“I thought it was just OK. And honestly it’s been kind of pedestrian from him throughout the camp. But there’s certain things you see, and you see, and you see, and you see and then all of the sudden they reveal themselves in a game and, you know what, not surprised.

“I think he can be better, and I know I’ve seen better. He’s going to have to pick it up. I think he will. I think he’ll compete, but I don’t like how he’s catching the ball on the first play that comes out of his hands. Too many times the ball’s separating from him.”

I am over the Coleman experiment. There are too many guys showing us more that could take his spot as of now. TLL is definitely one of them. I don't care what Coleman has the potential to do, it's what he isn't doing right now that bothers me. Think it's time to move on.

As big as he is, he shows up like Gary Coleman on gameday.

He has value in the sense of how well he understands the playbook and his route assignments in certain coverages. Also you can audible with him without liability. But his individual skill set is underwhelming. He is just not real physical guy and not a strong hands catcher. He will make the roster cause his value is more then his direct competition for a roster spot. He gonna make the roster easily and I agree he should

Plays way too soft for a man his size. Just a very passive player that looks very amateurish out there. Not impressed, at all. It's like when the ball is going his way in the air, I'm expecting the worst. Even if he catches it, I'm waiting for his unsoundness to show up and think he will fumble.

Reading in between the lines in the OP, it's clear that Coach is on the same page with most of us. He's seeing the screw ups and inconsistencies as well.

Mike Thomas has the #3 spot on lock, and TommyLee has won a spot on the 53-man roster IMO. He hasn't gotten a ton of opportunities but he has cashed in when he has gotten them.

We got spoiled with taking physical specimens falling in love with their talent developing them well and having them produce like fantasy monsters , J Graham and Colston being perfect examples. Every now and again we were bound to fail in one of these experiments, here we have Coleman. He is the Anti Colston. I see what Payton sees, carries the ball loosely, loses the football consistently, poor positioning and effort to the ball. He does it in practice and in games. I am over the experiment because the light is just not coming on for this kid and he is a liability with the football. I wanted it to come on for him very badly, who doesn't want a 6'6 dominant receiver? That catch over the middle in the game where he fumbled was very disappointing. Two huge mental breakdowns, number one secure the football, number two expect the hit from the safety who had the deep coverage, he failed on both accounts. With Cooks, Snead, Thomas and an upcoming TommyLee Lewis not sure how much longer we are going to wait on him.

knowing playbook is highly valued now? If the guy cant play what does that even matter? No more excuses for Coleman.

I'm going to challenge your certainty.....I say Payton is as fed up with his mediocrity as I am and he's cut.....and maybe sooner than later. Even if I'm wrong, I'm still sick of looking at that hot mess on the field....Keep Lampman and move on.....along with TLL and others.

I'm not a fan of the "Nick Toon 2.0" comments that I keep seeing. Nick Toon was a 4th round draft pick. Brandon Coleman was Undrafted. Nick toon had 21 catches for 283 yards and 1 TD for us in TWO years. Brandon Coleman had 30 catches for 454 yards and 2 TDs for us in his first real year of NFL games.

Now I 100% agree that Coleman hasn't lived up to expectations, but let's not forget how bad Toon actually was. Coleman was Undrafted for a reason and those reasons are showing up a lot as of late, but let's just see how he rebounds from this before completely writing him off.
