Sean Payton, as he helpfully pointed out during Wednesday's breakfast with the NFC coaches, has been "back" for some time. But he hasn't officially returned to football yet. And as he prepares to do that over the next few months, he's basically in a rookie coaching mode again.

But that's how Payton wants it to be. He's worried that trying to just be the same old Saints team would result in him taking on the wrong frame of mind when he and the team approach the season.

I think it's essential because I think it's dangerous to think, 'Well, he's back, and they're back to being the old Saints.' That's a dangerous mindset for a team to have," Payton said. "That's not real. We could turn around and win five games if you don't correct some of what's [faulty]. So there's a lot of things that have changed."

He's exactly right.

With the talent and scheme issues the team had last year defense, it was going to be a struggle even without the "bounty" BS.

We would have been lucky to get to 9-7 even with Payton on the sideline, and I think he knows that.

i dunno... with payton on the sidelines, i dont think we lose those first 4 in a row, probably 3-1. broncos game would've probably had the same outcome. he wouldnt have lost the falcons game, the game management at the end of the first half was horrible, brees threw 5 picks and we lost by 10. payton on the sideline and brees throws maybe 3 and we kick a field goal at the end of the half and we win that one. giants probably the same just not as bad of a beatdown. and panthers second game probably wouldve been a W. thats 12-4.

no one will ever know.

but this year i dont see a single digit win column this season. :ezbill:

You have to take that approach every season anyway. There's way too much parity in the league from season to season not to.

Here's a sentence I never thought I'd live long enough to see written:

It's about winning football games and getting the Saints back to the place that we're used to seeing them: the postseason.
