One of the lingering questions of the 2016 New Orleans Saints season has been what happened to linebacker Stephone Anthony, the team's leading tackler as a rookie in 2015 who could barely see the field on defense this season.
Coach Sean Payton and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen pointed earlier this year to Anthony needing to better understand his role. The team moved Anthony, a first-round pick in 2015, from middle linebacker to strong-side linebacker in the offseason with the expectation that veteran James Laurinaitis would start in the middle, but Anthony hardly played in the new spot as the team has used three safeties in favor of three linebackers this year.
Finally, the Saints had a chance to see Anthony in a significant role on defense as he played every snap in Sunday's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Anthony played middle linebacker in place of Craig Robertson (shoulder), who took the job from Laurinaitis earlier this season.
After evaluating Anthony's performance, Payton saw some good from the young linebacker, but still sees issues that need to improve.
