By virtue of the tie breaker rules, the division leader of the NFC west is settled 1st. That would be Seattle, based on the Hawks win over the Niners. Then the next tie breaker would be between the Saints and Hawks. The Saints would have the advantage over the Hawks, based on their win against the Hawks.

Anyone else see it differently?

No in a week. It is too early to know if the Seattle win helps or hurts us in the long run so I don't care which way it goes tonight. I very much care who has it after this week because beating the 49ers can only help and losing to them can only hurt.
We are #1 tonite if Seattle wins. That was my original point. What needs to happen against the niners does not change a thing for the Saints. We will remain the #1 seed with a win over the niners. The Saints will just be the #1 seed longer and can shut the media up.

I don't understand any of this. What I am saying is that its tonight that doesn't matter because we will have the 1 seed if we beat the 9ers. We will not have it if we do not. Both of those things happen regardless of what Seattle does tonight. And I am not sure what the media is saying that you think will stop. Unless we absolutely trounce the 9ers they won't be saying anything except that they are one of the SB front runners. They will say it even with them at the 5 seed because it is still possible for them to win that division.

True...this brings on a bit of a predicament as far as rooting interests.

Even though we cosmetically could secure the #1 seed for a week via a Seattle win, I am not certain that that's the outcome we want in the grand scheme of things. I am leaning towards us needing Seattle to take an L rather than getting the satisfaction of having the #1 seed next to our team's name for an extra week.

Even though we own the tiebreaker, I don't like Seattle sitting tied with us with four weeks remaining.
Exactly. The last thing we want is to go back up to Seattle in the playoffs.

Playing with the ESPN playoff machine all morning, I still don't see us getting HFA with anything less than 14-2.

I think that's what they call being in control of your destiny.

But really it's all semantic. The winner of this game will be in control - that's the bottom line. It doesn't really matter what any of it looks like before the game.

Of course, it's also entirely possible that one or both of us doesn't win every game after this one.

The truism that nobody here seems to realize. As tight as this season is shaping up, there won't be any rest-the-starters game(s).

Any virtual #1 seeding now is utterly meaningless. Guess it helps those folks who're whistling past the graveyard.

I believe the only reason we are second now is because technically speaking SF conference percentage is slightly higher. We have played 2 more conference games than them and have won 1 more than them it because of that the a stage is slightly better.

I believe the best bet is to have Vikings win. We take care of business next week and take our spot. Would much rather Seattle fall back a little bit.

I actually think Seattle beats the whiners in their next meeting and wins the division with the whiners being a 12-4 wild card team. LOL
I was thinking this as well. Even if SF wins this week(I hope not but you never know), they still have to play Seattle one more time and it is in Seattle. Seahawks have already beaten SF once and the rematch is in Seattle. Would not surprise me if Seattle wins the NFC West. We have the tiebreaker over Seattle due to our win earlier this year. Long time Saints fans will appreciate, like I do, the thought of SF going 12-4 and being a Wild Card. Think about the Dome Patrol years when we went 12-4 and go a Wild Card. It would be funny to see. Take care of business this week, which I think we will, and it becomes more of a possibility.

We need Seattle to lose tonight so that, when we win Sunday, we have at least a one game lead on the rest of the NFC. I don't see any scenarios where Seattle winning helps the Saints.

Agree. Plus I think Seattle losing tonight would take a bit of edge off for the 49ers in their situation coming into our game.

I don't want the added pressure (yet) of wearing the #1 headband, and it giving our opponents more incentive to beat us.

Think of it this way,
one way to look at pulling for Seattle today- you want the Vikings to get taken down a notch, and then for them to beat the Packers in a few weeks. Worst case scenario you dont want to lose the Niners game AND lose a first round bye. A 2 seed wouldn't be the end of the world

Better yet, I care about it after week 17.
Exactly, regardless if the Saints are #1 seed tomorrow, Sunday afternoon...etc. after week 17. It does not matter before then. I was just simply stating a fact, relative to the game tonite! The national media loves to promote certain teams as being #1 seed...blah blah. They did so last night and again this morning, with the Ravens. SO, AFTER THE SEAHAWKS BEAT THE VIKINGS TONITE, we can see and hear, THE SAINTS ARE NOW THE #1 SEED, for NOW! Nothing wrong with that.
