Does anyone know if this vulnerable area of Louisiana is secure? If something goes wrong here, the damage will be catastrophic for the entire south central and eastern parts of LA. Most of the mississippi river water would head straight for Morgan City instead of New Orleans. The whole oil and gas, wildlife, seafood, etc businesses could be ruined, including the mass flooding of towns like Morgan City, New Iberia, Franklin etc. Bridges along the Atchafalaya River would crumble. Also, the Mississippi River at New Orleans would become something like Bayou Lafourche instead of a big bustling river. The whole scenerio would be devestating.
Board calls for beefing up security at Old River Control Structure
PORT ALLEN, La. A levee board with oversight of the Atchafalaya River is calling for beefed up security on the Old River Control Structure, which keeps the Mississippi River from changing course and heading down the Atchafalaya.
The Atchafalaya Basin Levee District has voted to ask state and federal officials for more security at the Old River Control Structure.
Board officials say the structure is vulnerable to terrorists and to runaway barges that could damage the structure. The board noted that barges can be lost during high waters on the river when the river is flowing fast.
