"Like most Americans, I really get disturbed when taxpayer money goes to institutions which proceed to take votes, make policy or make statements that really denigrate the military."
Sen. David Vitter, R-Louisiana, a co-sponsor of the Semper Fi Act of 2008.

Berkeley to Marines: You're 'not welcome in our city'
By Wayne Drash

(CNN) -- Berkeley, the famously liberal college town in California, has taken aim at Marine recruiters, saying they are "not welcome in our city."

Republican lawmakers in Washington fired back this week, threatening to take back more than $2 million of federal funding to the city as well as money designated for the University of California-Berkeley, the campus that became a haven of protests during the Vietnam War.

The battle erupted after the Berkeley City Council approved a measure last week urging the Marine recruiters to leave their downtown office.

"If recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders," the item says.

It goes on to say the council applauds residents and organizations that "volunteer to impede, passively or actively, by nonviolent means, the work of any military recruiting office located in the City of Berkeley."

yeah, first things first

Whenever i am on the plane with him, it is SO HARD not to say something. There should be some kind of civic "Hold Thy Tongue" or "Refrain from Free Speech" award or something.

Though i guess i wouldn't be on the plane with Vitter in the first place, if he didn't return to the area pretty frequently. So he's comin' back for SOMETHING.

This guy is about as relevant as Rush Limbaugh at this point- except far more dangerous since he can actually help "make laws."

Yes and he's now got that seat just as long as he wants it, since Jindal has taken a governorship Vitter would be a fool to want, and there are no other saleable Republicans in the state as U.S. Senate contenders.

i guess what i SHOULD say to him on the plane is "what are YOU doing here?"

i'm not as terrified of him as i was before he started running his mouth and depleting his New-Guy credibility. i think most of the rest of the Senate has him figured out by now, and knows better than to take him seriously.

i guess the best that can happen is that he makes his Hill-to-K-Street segue more expeditiously than Tauzin or Breaux did. i.e., that he doesn't waste any more of our time than absolutely necessary to make maximum profit for himself.

I loved his self-righteous, moral high ground attitude about denying the Jena Choctaw a casino in Louisiana.

Then, it came out that Vitter's campaign had accepted money from Jack Abramoff on behalf of the Coushatta Tribe (Grand Casino Coushatta) to kill off the Jena tribe's bid.

In the end, the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs told Vitter and Blanco to shut up and the Jena Choctaw are now well on their way to putting in a casino just a couple of miles north of the Pentacostal Campgrounds.

Simply amazing.

While I loathe that hypocrite Vitter, I think the people of Berkeley ought to be ashamed of themselves.

They shouldn't cut the funding to the city or Cal though -- they ought to build a new military base right outside of town.

i am particularly in awe of his ample, loud, and public remarks on the sanctity of marriage as an institution.

But this town is nothing but hookers, and without them it just wouldn't be Washington. this is why when Livingston stepped out of the seat Vitter stepped into, we knew the sex scandal must have been PARTICULARLY disturbing. (cue up EWE "dead girl or live boy" quote)

or maybe Livingston's abrupt and Louisiana-disastrous departure, was just Vitter standing behind waiting to pull the knife out of Livingston's back. In any case, i think someone put their money on the wrong nag back in '99.

Vitter's tender ruminations on matrimony classify as a minor amusement when i consider the blatant lie he told about the $1 billion Katrina-related White House concession he never got. In today's party-politics system, you know you're ineffective when your own PARTY issues a statement to specifically point out that you are lying.

It's not just that he is a hypocrite. They are all hypocrites. In Vitter's case, it is that he comes across as an influence peddler for whom the interests of his Louisiana constituency is the lowest of priorities. he doesn't even TRY to be smooth about it.

Saddest of all is that on paper, he has the education and credentials to bring credibility into that chair. It's like watching a beloved pet go rabid, or like he has "Mad Senator Disease" or something.

Berkeley? Is he really getting calls at his local constituency offices because Berkeley wants to harass recruiters? Why is a wealthy suburb in California getting federal subsidies on that scale anyway? Why not just sponsor a bill to yank it UNRELATED to the military?

I agree 100%. Berkeley can't have it both ways. Without the Marines, they loose the right to protest the Marines. There's being ultra liberal, and then there's being just plain dumb. Berkeley is the latter in this case.

I don't know what's harder -- being a conservative in Berkeley or an ice cube in hell.

My old boss lives very near to Berkeley- and is one of the most hard-core Conservatives I've ever known... You're right though, he is a rarity- he also happens to be a raging *******, which is why I no longer work for him. :9:

God...Ooops, can't say that. Heaven...Ooops, there I go again. So much for free speech, and freedoms and all that silly stuff.
