Postalsaint, Thanks for going postal and posting these stories. Looks like Nolan is under a lot of criticism for being too conservative. I like the fact that the 9ers pass offense has been subpar, as has their run defense, and it looks like they don't do a good job defending the pass in the clutch. I expect another big day from Drew and the receivers and Deuce, especially since the 9ers have played poorly on the road. Hopefully, Reggie can it on the action.

Wow, just a week ago the niner fans were trying to push Nolan as coach of the year.

Bumped because of 2 very good articles in Oakland Tribune, and several articles in Sacramento Bee:

49ers need cool Brees to set sail
S.F. may try to make New Orleans' hot QB one-dimensional

SANTA CLARA — When the 49ers play Sunday at New Orleans, they'll face the NFL's hottest passer. But one way to stop Saints quarterback Drew Brees might be to force him to keep putting the ball up.
"This game is about us staying focused and trying to make them one-dimensional," 49ers safety Keith Lewis said Wednesday. "If we take away the run and make them strictly a passing team, it should be a good game for us."

Brees has had the most productive five-game stretch in NFL history, throwing for 1,954 yards. He's thrown for at least 300 yards in each of those outings, including a 510-yard performance two weeks ago, the most passing yardage in an NFL game this season....

Nolan's dad once a casualty of'Aints

SANTA CLARA — One of Mike Nolan's lasting memories about New Orleans also is painful one.
As the 49ers coach began preparations for Sunday's game at New Orleans, Nolan on Wednesday recalled the day in 1980 he learned that his father, Dick, had been fired as the Saints coach. The elder Nolan, who had previously coached the 49ers, was dismissed after a Monday night loss to the Los Angeles Rams dropped "The'Aints" to 0-12.

"They had the bags out. That was difficult," the younger Nolan said. "My father had two, maybe three good years there but the last year was difficult. It's never easy when you get fired, and it never is pretty but it is part of the territory."

Dick Nolan spent 1977 in New Orleans as an assistant to Hank Stram and became head coach the next season, going 15-17 over two seasons before the 1980 tailspin.

Mike Nolan was playing football at the University of Oregon when his father was coaching the Saints, and he said he had some good times in New Orleans when he had a chance to visit his family.

He learned of his dismissal while attending Oregon's football banquet, at which he received an award in recognition of his academic achievement and inspirational play.

A relative relayed word of the firing to the younger Nolan in a phone call. Mike Nolan said he walked to a nearby bar and watched a television news account of his father's firing...

For future reference, the best 49er writer is Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, no one else is even close.
