SF Final Defensive Scheme (1 Viewer)

And, yet... DA still hung MW out to dry!

(Pathetic scheme as to what they were supposed to do!)
There should of been someone or 2 protecting the end zone. It seems that they were trying to prevent a completion, instead of a score. Who cares about the completion. Only way Diggs could of scored was during that scenario that happened in the Minny Fluke

Did anyone notice the last SF defensive scheme? 3 LBs and 8 DBs.
Does anyone remember the Saints defensive scheme for the Minn Miracle:
4 DL, 1 LB and 6 DBs.
Interesting
Different scenarios. MN only needed a FG to beat us in 2017.

However, the biggest head scratcher with the Saints defensive scheme on the final play was that we had Craig Robertson drop into the middle of the field and guard no one. MN was out of timeouts and would not have had enough time to complete a pass in the middle of the field and get in FG range. We should have baited Keenum into throwing the ball to the middle of the field by putting someone 30 or so yards back from the line of scrimmage and then dropping that person maybe 5 yards back even further. Instead, Robertson is fairly close to the line of scrimmage and drops back into a zone where there are no pass catching threats. We in effect wasted a defender.

MN only needed a FG to win. Completely different scenario.

The local sports media said the problem wasn't the formation. I thought at the time it was dumb to use 4 DL. Demeco will be a HC one day with, dare I say, more success than DA.

Im thinking he’s the next Texans coach

They had no timeouts and no ability to set up the FG without getting out of bounds. No reason not to have 8 DBs in the game.

Hindsight is 20/20, but Marcus Williams whiffing like that was not foreseeable. It’s not like Diggs was wide open. Except for one of the most inexplicable missed tackles in history, game over.

In other words, not sure the play call was the problem.

Definitely a fair argument- All Williams had to do was go to the sideline and tackle Diggs towards the inside.

Exactly. I understand the main purpose of re-litigating the Minny Miracle is for some to take yet another shot at DA, and therefore reality doesn't fit the current narrative, but if Marcus Williams makes a routine tackle the game is over. He was in position to make the play, he just didn't make it. That's not on DA, that's on the player. That's not a shot at MW either the guy ended up being a very good player for us, albeit with tackling issues at times but with him that was the trade off. He'd fly across the field to break up a pass, grab a pick, or make a TD saving tackle but sometimes he'd whiff on the play completely.

Deuce spoke about this a week or so ago with Mike Hoss ..was a friday when they were going over play calls.

he sighed about this one...said yeah saints were supposed to be in picket defense where they force the throw to the INSIDE and protect the boundary and goal line

very interesting as to why they did the complete opposite

Saints were up by 1, minn ball at 25 with :25 seconds left ....Minn used their final timeouts. after they got to their 38 with :14 seconds left NO take time out.

had they simply ran the picket defense here force to middle you are talking anywhere from 8-12 seconds running off that clock...the deeper the throw the more time off that clock...even if it was a 20 yard completion up the middle ..they would be at saints 42 with the clock burning to try to attempt a rushed 57 yard FG attempt at worst.

instead 61 yard TD....man

MW makes the tackle = DPI and a GW FG attempt.

We actually tried to blow the Carolina game the week before with a botched coverage in the EZ on the last play...we lucked out with dude dropping the ball.
