Vilma, Saints seem like good fit
By Les East/The Advocate
METAIRIE — The New Orleans Saints needed a playmaker in the middle of their defense and Jonathan Vilma wanted to get back to playing in the middle of a defense.
So the February 29 trade that brought Vilma from the New York Jets to play middle linebacker for the Saints seems to make sense for both parties.
The Saints’ defense, which was 26th in the NFL last season, gave up averages of 348.1 yards and 24.3 points per game as the team struggled to a 7-9 record. So priority one in this offseason is to bring in players who can significantly improve that unit.
It all started with Vilma, who reportedly came at the modest cost of a fourth-round draft choice in this month’s draft and a conditional pick in next year’s draft.
The Saints have kept working on the defense, bringing in three other players. Dan Morgan was signed away from Carolina as a free agent to compete with Scott Shanle at weakside linebacker.
