It might sway opinion on the idea of stricter gun laws, but I wouldn't say with would change the idea of the damage a particular gun can do. The power of an AR is well-known. There's no doubt images can sway public opinion, but I'm not so sure it's going to matter about a specific gun.
I agree with @Optimus Prime . We "know" the damage, but we don't sense the damage: we don't see it, we don't smell it...
Have you ever seen a person burn? The skin peeling off? The screams? The convulsions? The smell of burning flesh? I am sure we all "know" what that would look like... I'd think most people have felt the effect of fire on their flesh, even if just touching a hot surface, and/or seen the effects of fire on flesh from various degrees of burning; we see in movies/TV people burning (which may or may not be accurate)... but when you see it in front of you, smell it, hear it, then you really, really know.
Remember the image below? The outrage it generated?
As for guns, I don't think the idea is to change opinions on one particular gun, but to create enough outrage that lawmakers are compelled to do something, anything more that what they are doing today; at the very least strip the NRA of its influence.
