Should the Saints try their own Carriker experiment?

Last year the Rams drafted Adam Carriker a college DE and moved him to DT then to NT and he had success starting 16 games at NT with 30 tackles and 2 sacks.

Should the Saints try and do the same thing. The DT class is top heavy with Dorsey and Ellis, neither of which is going to be available at 10. By drafting a big DE and having him add weight and move inside we would have a nice pass rush from the inside.

The guy I am looking at is Phillip Merling [Clemson] he is 6'5" 280lbs. and could easily add 10-20lbs. before the season in a similar way to Carriker. He is a power end that put up 7 sacks and was good against the run with 78 tackles/ 17 TFL. He is ranked #11 by Mel Kiper and as the 4th DE by Mayock.

Having a 6'5" 295lbs. penetrating 3 technique tackle would be a nice addition to the defense.
