Whenever a cornerback possessed an extraordinary skillset such as limiting the number of plays a quarterback would allow having against a particular defensive back, that player would be labeled as a shutdown down corner.

Shutdown Corners No Longer Exist in Today's NFL

Rule changes have led to defenses breaking down.

The 2015 Broncos will probably be the last dominant, historical defense we witness for a very long time. Flags would fly today with how Ware, Wolfe and Miller would punish QBs with their hits and dragging them on the ground.

Despite this, that Broncos team had a problem with the deep ball late in the season. It was their only weakness besides their offense being mediocre at best. They had their slip ups occasionally in the secondary.

I think in the future we'll see a point where a #1 ranked defense is giving up 21 points a game.
