The biggest concern with Davenport was (and still is) that we paid a high price for a guy with massive potential but was going to need significant time to develop into an elite NFL talent.
If we cannot afford to extend him after 2023 because of the huge salaries bona-fide pass rushers command, then we will have effectively groomed him for another team with cap space to jump in and reap all the benefits when he finally hits his peak!
That's not good business. Let's hope it's us and not another team that gets the best from him!

He’s only 25 years old and it’s entering the prime of his career. Hopefully we can produce a 10+ Sack Season and then have many more for us.

He has been for real just got a lot of hate. His problem is injuries.
Yeah, one of the many what ifs of 2018 for me is what if Davenport hadn't sustained that toe injury. He was really starting to play like a beast when it happened vs. MIN and then he missed time and wasn't the same when he came back, either. Would've loved to play that NFCCG with a healthy Davenport and Rankins.

What are you talking about. He came out in year one playing great. Whenever he actually played, he played great. it wasn't his lack of development that has held him back, it was injuries.

No one is saying he is a bad player, and you cannot blame the player for the price paid for him.
But two first round picks gets you Khalil Mack….a guy who contributes immediately at an elite level.
There was always a concern that someone as raw as Davenport would take a little time to develop into an elite talent.
This was proved by the huge improvement in technique we saw from him in year 2 when he developed a number of impressive new moves.
Of course he has been hurt by injuries and there is almost no limit to his ceiling but it is a fact that you have a player for 5 years before he is free to move…and it is always a risk to invest a huge draft price in a player who even injury free is going to take 2 to 3 years to reach an elite level.
It’s an issue of free agency as much as it is about Davenport’s talent/durability.
This really isn’t controversial…every sane GM takes these factors into account.

Yes, but no one knows if it’s of the “he tweaked something so let’s not risk it in a blowout” injury or a “will require missing games” injury.
Jeff Duncan tweeted this morning that the news on Davenport’s injury “might not be good.” Please be wrong as usual Jeff!

He is going to at least miss games. Not good news
