I know we all had our sights set on Trufant or Samuels, but now that that's not going to happen, we need to start looking at solid, consistent second tier guys who can fill in.
What do you guys think about this group of guys as possible signings?

  1. Ricardo Colclough
  2. Drayton Florence
  3. Domonique Foxworth
  4. Hank Poteat
  5. Jeff Shoate
  6. B.J. Sams
I know we've all discussed Florence, and BJ Sams has some injury concerns, but I think one or more of these guys could possibly be a Saint next year. I think Foxworth is an interesting possibility. I'd be happy if we picked him up as depth/competition. He started some games in Denver and held his own. He is 5'11", and has also played safety. Colclough has also shown potential. What would you guys think if picked up one or two of these guys and drafted a playmaker at safety?

Isn't Foxworth a restricted free agent? Colclough, Florence, and Foxworth are all behind legit starters on the depth chart so it'll be interesting to see if they can do anything.

Florence would be a stop gap type player. I read that he's best as a nickel back and I feel we need a #1 or #2 considering our position.

After the top three: Samuel, Asomugha and Trufant.... Florence is ranked fourth. The talent level falls dramatically though with Florence on down. Some others though by rank would be: Brian Kelly(Tampa), Eric Green (Zona), Randall Gay (NE), Reynaldo Hill (Titans) and Jason Webster (Buffalo).

We may have no choice but to go after some of these guys. At the moment I'm just not sure which of these guys may have it in them to take it to the next level. Can any be trusted to man up on a receiver?

We are just going to have to draft corners. Look at all these top corners we want. What do they all have in common? They were all drafted by the team they play for now. Shortcuts are nice but rarely pay big dividends. It may take us a year or two, but we will have to draft well and develop defensive talent.

You know Bonchie, in my heart I know thats what will have to happen. The thing is that I almost feel as though I'd be giving up on the season already. We know we're not going anywhere with this defense. The injuries, the sub par talent and then rookies coming in to fill the holes. WOW! Thats a tall order just to get last years team competitive.

I'm just hoping something can be pull out of a hat for us. Maybe something could magically happen with D Hall? Miracles do happen.....

I think we'll be fine this season. We'll have the same offense, maybe better with Meachum starting, and an improved Defense at the least. Our DE's should be better under Oregeron, we should at least draft a MLB that can start this year. We'll probably get at least one corner who can contribute. We'll probably then sign on of these second tier CB's to come compete in camp. Chances are we get a DT in the first 3 rounds also.

We'll be in better shape then last year. We have no excuse to not make the playoffs. But I don't expect us to be a dominate team for another 2-3 years of solid drafting.

I was about to post a new thread saying basically the same thing. We can have a top 10 - 15 defense without any major free agency moves.

I think we have all been focusing too much on the top CB's in FA. They are also considered near the top in the league. Well, they have all been tagged now.
We must focus now on IMPROVING our Secondary. Let's face it, we need more than one new CB. We need improvement at the Safety spot too. We must look at these 2nd tier guys. They'll be less expensive for sure. What we have to look at is not, "are they tops in the league", instead are they an upgrade from what we have. It will not take alot to upgrade from David, Craft, and Thomas. We must get better and a rookie is not gonna be our only answer.

Colclough is the only guy on that list that I would consider.

I'd rather just draft 1 early (1st or 2nd rd) and another in the later rounds... let them duke it out with Usama, Craft, and JD, and see what happens.

We should REALLY be focusing on improving the front 7.

I feel pretty strongly that Florence ends up as a Saint.
He's the kind of mid-level free agent that we usually target.
On top of that, he roomed with Drew Brees while they played together on the Chargers.

I don't think he'll help though. For fantasy football reasons, I watched the Chargers quite a bit last year (whenever it didn't conflict with the Saints game)... and Florence seems to get picked on a lot. He wasn't getting torched for 1.8 long touchdowns per game like Jason David, but he did seem to give up a lot of short and intermediate catches.

Florence is definitely a nickelback, and personally I feel we already have a pretty good nickelback in Jason Craft. Unfortunately with Trufant and Asomugha off the market, the FA CB market is pretty thin.

give me Drayton Florence and draft a couple of DBs, one early and one late, and let's go to war.

This is making me sick. I can still hear Mel Kiper jumping all over Jim Haslett's butt when we drafted Sullivan. He was saying if we were going to trade up we should have picked Trufant. "This is going to come back on your organization down the road" or something like that. That's when Haslett was saying, "Well..........we have Dale Carter" or "We like the guys we've got" or whatever. :covri:

Say what you will about Kiper, but he was $$$ that day.
