Someone explain 10sec runoff (1 Viewer)

I'm not understanding how you penalize a team for a call you got wrong..... Makes no sense

They aren't penalizing a team for a call they got wrong. They are preventing the other team from being penalized for a call they got wrong.

Let's look at a hypothetical...

Texans line up at their own 45 to run a play, down 27-21. There are 6 seconds left, and they have no timeouts remaining. Watson throws a hail mary that is caught, and ruled a touchdown. The score is tied. Since it's a scoring play, it's automatically reviewed. The replay clearly shows the runner was down at the two yard line with 2 seconds remaining. Had the correct call been made on the field, the player would have been ruled down, the clock would have been running with 2 seconds.

So, what is more fair to the Saints? To allow the Texans to run a free play from the 2 yard line with a stopped clock at 2 seconds? Or to pretend for a minute that the correct call had been made, and that there is no way they could have lined up in time to run another play?
