Spencer Rattler is at Saints facility early for voluntary workouts post-Carr injury news (2 Viewers)

I understand the rose colored glasses phenomenon but sometimes you need to look at reality. When Rattler was drafted I thought he could develop and one day become a starter. Last season he couldn’t beat out Heaner for the backup qb position and now he is a what, a franchise qb? Come on, wake up.

Couldn't beat out Haener? He got the starts when Carr got hurt the first time and finished the year as the starter. DA can call it two number 2s all he wants, but it was clear that Rattler beat out Haener.

Right, every argument in support of Rattler could be made for Heaner, it’s a toss up between them.

Haener got bench after one start and one terrible half of football. It is not a toss up between the two of them. If you want to say you don't think Rattler showed enough, cool, but to claim he and Haener are a toss up is pretty crazy.

Maybe Haener improves and moves past him, but at this point Rattler is pretty far ahead.

Count me in the camp who would love for Rattler to succeed, but have not yet seen any reason to believe that he will. He had a couple of good passes last season that I recall, but had twice as many bad plays and fumbles.

I hope I’m wrong, I’m just not seeing it. He will need to improve in all aspects of his game. He has not yet adjusted to the speed of the NFL. In his own defense though, he had crappy coaching and a supporting cast of nobodies. Same could be said about Carr as well.

It’s easy to miss seeing intangible things on a bad team…. Especially if you are not looking for them.

We had a guy with a big arm…. And not much more than that except a goofy demeanor and team spirit…. Spencer is not Winston…. Not sure what he is yet…. But I’m sure he’s not that. I’ve seen enough of him to know that much.

Also have a feeling we gonna find out soon enough if he’s more than just arm talent and attitude.
I can't believe I'm saying this...but regarding Spencer Rattler... I'm agreeing more than not with this guy.

Which is what I was wondering. Just not sure if there is more to it or something about Rattler I might have missed.

Similarly, I’ve cooled on Haener but hope for the best as long as he’s here. Wouldn’t say I’m not a fan, just have lowered expectations for him at this point.

Looking forward to seeing what Moore can do with the QB room, whichever players are a part of that.
I have not given up on Haener. I think people should go back as watch the 1st half of the Wash game. You'll see that he made a great throw for a 1st that was called back for a penalty. And that MVS dropped a pass right in his hands for a nice gain that would have been a 1st. Also the OL played like crap in the 1st half. It's all about the context

Don’t want to start a thread, I’d like to ask:

All of this talk about Rattler has made me wonder what in the heck went wrong with Haener?

Jake doesn’t have a strong arm but it’s strong enough, and he had shown the ability to make quick decisions, process the field and take what the defense gave him….

Where did that go? Was it the same with him as Rattler, that he had zero to work with? I’m genuinely curious as to what has happened there. I truly had hope that he could become a solid (not spectacular) starter for us.
The plays are based on timing and improvisation if needed. Jake didn’t adjust to the speed and flow of the game. He was so jacked up he ran into traffic. He never settled down and looked calm and comfortable. Rattler on the other hand, immediately looked calm and comfortable. For Jake to be better, he needs live reps until he finally adapts and relaxes. However, live reps are hard to come by. So when you get them you better be ready. Just keep Jake as a number 4 and let him be a project.

Jake was the guy I thought had potential to be a good starter. I value cerebral traits much more than fork let’s chuck it arm strength. Want the QB to be able to read a defense, quickly, make the right decisions etc.
I thought Jake would be able to do those things, boy was I wrong.

My talent evaluation is definitely random message board user, only guy I’ve had picked to be a star in the last ten years is AK. I did get that one right. lol

Anyhow. I’ve watched a lot of Rattler, he’s a big arm imo with not much else. Some big plays but many many big turnovers.

I’ll be rooting for em all to be the next Montana as long as they wear the colors of my lifelong favorite team.
Go back and watch the 1sy half of the Wash game. 1st possession, 3rd and 3,JH avoids the rush and throws a very good pass to Wilson for a 1st, Called back for holding. Not JH's fault.. Next play OL stunk and he gets sacked.
3rd possession 2nd and 4 JH throws a good pass to MVS and it goes thru his hands for what should have been a 20yd gain into Wash territory, not JH's fault. Next play he's almost sacked and he throws a pick.

I'm not saying JH played well but he like Rat in a lot of situations got very little help. Take away that penalty and the drop and things could have been different

Do I think Rattler is our long term-solution at QB? No.
Do I agree that he's the best that we have right now? Yes.
Do I agree about letting him cook for his spot? Yes.
Do I want us to draft a QB at 9? HELL NO.

Pretty sure 60minutes has said Rattler has his share of fans in the building.. we just don't really know how Moore feels about his potential.

Only take a QB high if you're absolutely sold on him as the guy. If Rattler beats out a guy you like and draft later on there's no controversy.

I'm fine with drafting a QB with the 9th pick if we're sold on the guy as THE guy. Just don't screw that up because we can always just ragtag it with Rattler and a veteran until we take the real shot next year if Rattler ain't it.
And that's why I don't see us going QB at #9. Sanders and Dart aren't surefire top 10 guys. Sanders maybe a late first round kinda guy and during the Senior Bowl Dart was carrying 2nd/3rd round grades by scouts. Same thing happened 2-3 drafts ago when the media had 4-5 QB's going in the mid-late first and then they all "fell" to the 3-5th rounds.

I'd like to see a Rattler and Slough competition. Hopefully you can either land a franchise RB for them to lean on or a contested catch TE that can serve as a safety blanket at #9. I'd think long and hard about trying to get in front of the Raiders for Jeanty because we've seen what Moore can do with a stud RB. Build out the offense so they have a fighting chance and then if they fail you're hopefully looking at a deeper QB class next year that gives you a better chance of trading up or one falling to you.

It will be interesting to see which direction we go at pick 9. We will see if Kellen wants to start with a new QB.

I think we could be competitive with Rattler at QB. We just need to draft some more talent on the offense and defense. Juwan Johnson finally started making plays when Rattler was in but we could use a few more playmakers. I also don't put the second half struggles entirely on Rattler. Last year, the offense struggled with second half adjustments. We would score most of our points in the first half and struggle in the second with Carr and Rattler.

Haener got bench after one start and one terrible half of football. It is not a toss up between the two of them. If you want to say you don't think Rattler showed enough, cool, but to claim he and Haener are a toss up is pretty crazy.

I don't think Rattler showed enough at all. But here's the deal. We did not have a good coaching staff. They were not grooming well. The play calling was not good. The personal decisions were not good. Penning never should've been put at RT. We see that now. He should've been moved to Guard. How did those coaches not see it? They sucked.

To put it simply, I don't think Rattler nor Haener were put into position to succeed (not referring to injuries, that was bad enough but I'm referring to coaching) and I don't believe for a moment that the coaching staff did them any favors. It's entirely possible for Haener to get a natural feel in this new offense which causes him to out perform Rattler. It's possible for vice versa to occur.

Don't write off either yet. Even Penning. He could even take to this new coaching staff well and elevate his pass blocking.
