During the Bush/Sproles combo the Saints nearly allowed a sack less per game.

2008 0.8
2009 1.2
2010 1.6
2011 1.6

2013 2.2
2014 1.9
2015 2.0

A healthy Spiller brings what we didn't have over the last 3 years. An outlet for Brees in the flats that essentially neutralizes pressure. Most teams do not have a match up for that type of back in the flats. If we use Spiller the same way we used Bush and Sproles it will virtually eliminate protection problems. Also we all know the potential problems this causes defenses when they assign corners and safeties to flat duty while ignoring coverage needs downfield.

2008 lineup

Brees had more attempts in 2008 than 2015.

He was sacked twice as much for 2015

2008 13 sacks
2015 31 sacks

We need to make Spiller more of a primary threat in the passing game. Ingram should take on the PT role as a receiver more often as well. All of this will open the downfield passing game up and slow down the pass rush.

In 2013 with Sproles and Graham, but smart defenses focused attention to where the threat was and our wideouts couldn't answer the call when facing inferior coverage personnel. Today we have younger more athletic wideouts that will answer the call if Spiller/Ingram in addition to Fleener/Hoo/Hill are drawing coverage from corners and safeties.

YAC

2013 Receivers (Colston, Moore, Meach, Stills)551 yds
Total Yac 2576 yds

2015 Receivers(Cooks, Snead, Colston, Coleman) 1054 yds
Total Yac 2551

The 2015 group didn't have the benefit of focused coverage on backs and tight ends, yet they picked up twice the Yac. Imagine Spiller taking the nickel corner and Snead faces a strong safety in coverage.

I agree. When you have a safety valve capable of 5-10 yards per dump off, the edge rusher needs to keep an eye out, and blitzes have fewer rushers to save a man to keep an eye on that RB. Maybe not every play, but it makes the D more cautious which is good for us.

Great post. You could clearly see last season that he wasn't healthy. I can't wait to see him out there this season.

TRUTH! When we lost Sproles in 14, the number of sacks we've given up since have been well chronicled. Before Sproles, we had Reggie, who was a similar type player. We've always had a satellite back for Drew to check down to when the pressure was on. We've not had that kind of player the last two years. But now that Spiller is healthy, maybe that will help take pressure off of our struggling O-line. As good as Reggie and Sproles were for us, I believe a healthy CJ Spiller is the best satellite back we've ever had.

Spiller has a decent set of hands as well. I can see us potentially using both Ingram and Spiller out of the huddle and then depending on the defensive situation(nickel, dime, base) sending Spiller out into motion as the slot receiver. If they go light with dime or nickel then freezing the DE with ghost motion/sweeps while Ingram bangs the ball inside against the weaker front. I think that this year, we by far have the best set of skill position players we've ever had. Cooks/Thomas/Sneed(even Coleman) along with Fleener/Spiller/Ingram are the best top to bottom group we've had in a while.

Well y'all, it's Friday night and I'm sure most of us about to crack a cold one ro start our weekend. When you do let's all toast ro Spiller's health. Our season may rest on it.:spit:

Might as well make that sack number 3 times the 2008 total with this line unless they make a quick change. Lelito is an open pass rush lane, might as well have only 4 linemen. But I see your point and agree, Spiller is a weapon.
