OVERVIEW

Syracuse had three underclassmen defenders who considered entering the NFL Draft following the 2011 season. Defensive end Chandler Jones and free safety Phillip Thomas decided to go pro, but Thomas returned to Syracuse in 2012 for his senior season.

After initially committing to Louisville out of high school, Thomas changed his decision and enrolled at Syracuse. He started 15 games over his first two seasons and was moved all over the defense, seeing time at linebacker and cornerback before setting in at strong safety in 2011. There, he finished third on the team with 67 tackles, adding three tackles for loss.

Thomas started all 13 games at safety in 2012, finishing as the Orange's top tackler with 88 stops. He also led the team with three forced fumbles and two interceptions, earning First Team All-Big East accolades from the media and coaches, alike.

While obviously shorter than scouts would like, Thomas is a proven playmaker whose instincts and physicality belie his size.

ANALYSIS

Strengths: Obviously shorter than ideal but possesses a very stout frame. Highly aggressive defender who uses his natural leverage advantage to slip through cracks in blocking fronts and prove a nuisance around the line of scrimmage. Thomas plays the game with reckless abandon and loves to throw his body around on the field, seeking big hits against the ballcarrier. Sent off the edge as a pass rusher, showing the lateral agility to avoid blocks from running backs and excellent closing speed. Good lateral agility and speed in coverage. Reportedly was timed at 4.26 seconds in the 40-yard dash during Syracuse's junior timing day.

Weaknesses: Obvious size limitations, though these concerns ironically, show up most when he's away from the game's biggest players. Makes most of his plays near the line of scrimmage. Thomas plays too aggressive and too often bites on fakes, finding himself constantly playing from behind, where his height and lack of arm length can be a real detriment. Has a tendency to lead with his shoulder on his hits, resulting in some big pops but also some slipped tackles.

Compares To: Bob Sanders, SS, Indianapolis Colts

While on the short side these days for a safety we thought that Shamarko more than made up for his stature limitations with attitude and big hitting ability. We're happy to pick him up here in round five.

Here's how the Jaguars draft looks so far:

1 Dion Jordan, OLB, Oregon
2 Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
3 Terron Armstead, OT/G, Arkansas Pine Bluff
4 Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
5 Shamarko Thomas, S, Syracuse

I sent a PM for LHS to go ahead and select ahead of Darkhorse, who apparently isn't accessible right now (I PM'ed him a few hours ago).

So we can do a pick for Darkhorse and then put up the poll for the Saints, once LHS makes his pick.

With the 9th pick in the 5th round, the Tennessee Titans select Javone Lawson, WR, Louisiana-Lafayette

I'm not gonna hold this up any longer. LHSTigers03 has not been online since 4:28pm yesterday and many of us PMed him so I'll just post the Bills pick based off a need that was not filled yet.
The Bills select...
PennState_logo.gif
Gerald Hodges, OLB, Penn State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 243. Arm: 32.08
40 Time: 4.78.
Projected Round (2013): 3-4.

3/2/13: The team leader played really well with 109 tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss, seven passes broken up, one forced fumble and two interceptions in 2012.

Hodges is a well-rounded linebacker with three-down potential for the NFL. He performed well at the East-West Shrine, but didn't stand out at the Combine.

8/29/12: Hodges led Penn State in tackles last season with 106 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, one interception, four passes broken up and two forced fumbles. It was his first full season of playing time. He is a hard-nosed player who has good instincts and a nice physical skill set. The Penn Stater looks like a solid second-day selection.
