Starting offense and defense after OTA's & Minicamp (1 Viewer)

Well done WGT! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

On O : Like another poster said, the jury is still out on Taysom, so it’s wait n see for him. Other than that, Wilson did not impress last year or so far this offseason, while Petis has. And Jones with his speed n versatility, is intriguing!!

On D, I hope we can sign ASJ. He’s still young but experienced n knows Staley n has experience in his D!

I also wanted to sign Jon Bullard cause he’s such a good run defender, n we struggled big time there last season.

Overall, excellent job! ⚜️⚜️⚜️

1. Good work: Thanks.

2. Unless I overlooked it… no mention of Stutsman. That young man is going to get some time on the field; not just on Special Teams. 🏈

:gosaints:

Thanks, it's a work in progress, but I enjoy updating it as the off season progresses.

No Foskey?
No Boyd?
No Rico?
My projection is based on three things: Snap counts in 2024 of the remaining players in the roster, free agent signings in 2025, and draft picks. Neither Foskey nor Boyd or Rico played significant snaps last year. People are high on Payton and to some extent Boyd, but they didn't get much play time last year and they are in the midst of a coaching change up, which puts them in a very vulnerable position: how much patience will the new staff have with drafted and undrafted players from previous regimes who haven't significantly contributed to the team?

On the dline, they have brought in their own players (Williams, Godchaux and Rumph) and the new players could already have a leg up on the competition. Of the draft I didn't add the 7th rounders because they are always long shots to even make the team. So I won't add them until we get more information on them.

My goal with this roster scheme is to identify the starting offense and defense, which means starting eleven on each side plus key backups and rotational players. I'm not looking to make a scheme with the full 53 or 90 man rosters.

A big problem I see is our receivers are too small to block anyone. That means 2 or 3 people just going completely unblocked every running play.

I'm curious what rumph can do he's is the purest 3-4 olb/de we have

OK, but can't they also use their speed to take DB out of the play

I believe he is an archetype, whether he makes the team or not he is the type of player Staley will be going after to implement his scheme

I want to see if Foskey can get some wind under his sails in this new defense.

I don’t see Chase Young as a full time OLB. He certainly hasn’t become a complete 4-3 end. Don’t get me wrong, I like the fact that he’s excelling at just rushing the QB and happy we resigned him.

But I don’t see Young as a full 4-down OLB responsible for stopping the run, dropping in coverage and/or rushing the passer. He’s a one-trick pony pass rusher IMO. 🤷🏼‍♂️
In 3-4 def he would stand up in base and most likely put his hand in the dirt in nickel. Which would be majority of the game. He will 85 90% time pass rush

In our 4-3 we typically take out the SOLB in nickel we most likely sub the Run stuff NT in this 3-4

First off, Good work on this. With projections, you have to start somewhere. I think you make some logical assumptions but there's one thing I'd be more reserve about. I think tendencies under the previous staff, like playing time or positioning, should be avoided. For example, if Baun would have still been a Saint last year, continuing to be misused and under utilized, I don't think the new staff would make the same mistake. As such, we can't count out Foskey at OLB or make other assumptions based on last year's snaps. Just a thought.

WRs are blocking DBs of similar size on the outside. Olave will be fine especially since he’s at 195. They have an advantage in using speed while pushing forward.

Our receivers aren’t new to run blocking as 4th year and 12th year starters.

Thanks. Yeah I try to not make many assumptions, but that is precisely why I'm not adding him yet to the rotation. As things stand, Foskey is in direct competition with Rumph and Diggs for a backup spot, but we have no information yet on performance by any of them. I think he has a good shot at making the roster, provided the team doesn't sign a vet or someone stands out at TC.
In regards to the base formation, it's safe to say the dline will be manned by a combination of Granderson, Young, Bresee, Godchaux, Shepherd with Cam, Saunders and hopefully Broughton subbing in. Its all but guaranteed that Taylor will play the star role that's been talked about as a staple of Staley's D. FWIW, last year there wasn't a clear cut starter between Shep, Saunders, Bresee... they all rotated at similar percentages of snaps.
