Stephen A on the Newton and Winston contracts (1 Viewer)

Stephen A is nothing but a blowhard.

Nobody forced Newton and Winston to sign those contracts.

Money isn't everything, and most people with a career realize this. You consider the pay, the stress, the benefits, the people, family, the city, the opportunities, the room for personal growth, whether the company is a good fit, sponsorship opportunities. Even things like access to specialist doctors or types of cuisine.

Newton knows Belichick will get the most out of him and maybe earn him another payday in free agency. Winston took a pay cut to get a chance for personal growth and long term opportunity with a great team. Both likely could have gotten more $ under worse circumstances.

I've taken multiple jobs for less than top $ because I enjoy fun projects in a respectable environment, away from major cities.

Technically, Drew was the same, respectable, but not great. Winston kinda fits in the same category. That said, outside of Holgrum in the 90s, and maybe NE, most people don't develop like that.
Brees was also stuck in Marty Schottenheimer's ball control offense.

No quarterbacks flourish under Marty-ball restrictions.

I am currently considering a job offer for less money than I am making where I am. The conditions and opportunities are much better, so I definitely see your point.

I am prepared for the negatives, but I don't get why Payton is supposed to be some quarterback guru. Brees was good before he got here, name another QB Payton has developed into a starting role for more than a few games?

To me there's a big difference in the fabled "QB Whisperer" like Bruce Arians and offensive geniuses like Sean Payton. I don't know if SP is seen as a QB guru. I think he's seen more as being a creative offensive mastermind. You look at the QBs he's worked with and you notice a theme:

In Philly Koy Detmer and Bobby Hoying had their best years with SP. Now, their best years were absolutely terrible but still.

Kerry Collins played his best football with SP with the Giants. Quincy Carter went 10-6 with SP in Dallas. A 41 year old Vinny Testaverde would throw 3,532 and 17 TDs with SP as the QB coach in Dallas. Drew Bledsoe put up respectable numbers with SP before Romo took over.

So then SP lands in NOLA with Brees and the rest is history. SP knows how to get the most out of a QB. I'm confident in that.

This is really simple.

some players TRY to maximize their earnings, some players have made enough that they don’t have to and thus are looking to prove a point or kick the can down the road and maximize in a year.

some teams can pull FA’s easier and get them to take less, some teams can’t and must throw money at players.

The Patriots and Saints are two such organizations and Cam/Winston are two such players that fit the former in each scenario
