Still hard to know what to expect from the offensive line with preseason over for Saints starters

By Nick Underhill -- Advocate

There was a point during training camp when Sean Payton felt the need to inject some levity into the narrative by pointing out the defense was making some plays against the second-team offense.

The point wasn’t to downplay the broken up passes or interceptions. The point was to make sure the conversation wasn’t getting confused. The level of competition is important to note because not all accomplishments are created equally.

So, that might be the way to look the successes the first-team offensive line had during one series against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night at the Superdome. It also might make the mistakes even more alarming.

Harping on the line might seem like old news by now. It was the story against Houston. It was the story against Pittsburgh. And, yes, it’s still the story now.

I've caught myself watching the Oline almost every play to see where the next breakdown occurs.

Our QBs have been getting pressure on around 40% of the snaps, before tonight. Barnes almost got McKown killed and certainly didn't look like a player who will help us in a most critical area.

And God bless us if Hills has to fill in at LT. Our Oline scouting is good-God awful.

Neglect....... We've gotten too used to picking up undrafted free agents and having them start. I know I'm exaggerating, we have spent draft picks on the line it just seems like we've struck out a lot lately. Drew will not last long if the line plays anything like it did tonight. That bad eh? Wasn't televised up here, so I haven't seen it yet. Guess I'll have to buy another barrel of bourbon to get through it tomorrow when it airs.

Sucks. Shame to be thinking of 2017 when 2016 hasn't started yet.

The starting O-line was much better tonight and I have zero complaints for them.....as a matter of fact, I'll say I'm proud of the way they stepped up. The second and third stringers were a hot mess disaster.

I disagree....guess you and I watched a different first quarter? After the starters left the game....it was a disaster. I predict our O-line will perform fine this year....and yes, everyone can remember or call me out for saying it. Game on! Who Dat !!

Thanks. I needed a pick-me-up.

It wasn't bad at all. Just the typical overreaction to backs ups striving to make a football team during preseason. The startes played well and that was without Armstead. Unger looks mid season form. Ingram popped off a few good runs to start with some decent lanes.

You shouldn't give up on the season after preseason games. They mean nothing.

Suggs and Dumervil were sitting out, along with a host of other starters. I would hope our starting offensive line would step up against their backups.

Exactly how I feel, they did nothing to bolster any confidence in them, hopefully they find the right combo of players that can protect Brees and improve the running game....we'll see

We saw this coming though, right? The O-line has been in steady decline since 2011. The apparent whiff on Peat, coupled with letting Jahri go, has blown the doors off.
