'Detroit of the South' bludgeoned by troubles

By John T. Bennett
As Detroit – beset by violence, debt and social woes – prepares to undergo a historic takeover by the Michigan state government, the city of Atlanta could be sliding toward a similar fate.

Some are quietly wondering whether Atlanta is in danger of becoming “the Detroit of the South.”
The city has experienced an ongoing succession of government scandals, ranging from a massive cheating racket to corruption, bribery, school-board incompetence and now the potential loss of accreditation for the local DeKalb County school system

"Detroit of the South" I wonder how long before the taxpayers are going to regret that new stadium?

Anyone see the irony in this paragraph......?

While incorporation has been popular with residents of the new cities, not all of Atlanta is as satisfied. The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus filed a lawsuit in 2011 to dissolve the new cities, claiming they were a “super-white majority” and diluting the voting power of minorities.

A buddy of mine, and his wife, lives in Dunwoody, he said since they became incorporated, their living has improved drastically.

I don't understand the basis of the lawsuit. I understand that it sucks when a wealthy community decides to not be part of your city anymore, but I still don't get the lawsuit.

Sounds like they saw an opportunity to fix their local community, and seized it. And now the people they seek to get away from wants to bring the shed down with the house. They only want these "super-white cities" because the citizens are like walking ATMs to their "collective"

It's all about large cities being able to leech off the wealth of those people to pay for inner city programs and government assistance. These things are almost always about socialism versus capitalism. OPM = Other People's Money

Article is incorrect, way off, and a bunch of semi-racist claptrap. There was never any "secession" involved.

I lived in the area for three years. The new "northern" cities were NEVER a part of the City of Atlanta; they were in unincorporated Fulton County, much the same as the northern cities of Alpharetta and Roswell, which have existed as cities in Fulton County for years.

DeKalb County (school board issue) is its own county with its own small towns/cities; somewhat analogous to Jefferson Parish. Atlanta has only a small portion of its city limits in DeKalb-- most of Atlanta is in Fulton County.
