Cha-ching. I'm surprised that Obama has outspent Hillary in this area. I always figured when it came to graft, the Clintons couldn't be beat. It looks like I'm wrong.

Superdelegates get campaign cash
February 14, 2008 03:54 PM

Many of the superdelegates who could well decide the Democratic presidential nominee have already been plied with campaign contributions by Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, a new study shows.

"While it would be unseemly for the candidates to hand out thousands of dollars to primary voters, or to the delegates pledged to represent the will of those voters, elected officials serving as superdelegates have received about $890,000 from Obama and Clinton in the form of campaign contributions over the last three years," the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics reported today.

About half the 800 superdelegates -- elected officials, party leaders, and others -- have committed to either Clinton or Obama, though they can change their minds until the convention.

Obama's political action committee has doled out more than $694,000 to superdelegates since 2005, the study found, and of the 81 who had announced their support for Obama, 34 had received donations totaling $228,000.

Clinton's political action committee has distributed about $195,000 to superdelegates, and only 13 of the 109 who had announced for her have received money, totaling about $95,000.

that's all well and good - they're handing over their money (or at worst, the money people have given them). but what's inevitible, IMHO, is a "vote for me and that $4 billion in Interstate construction you've been looking for or that submarine shipyard the Navy doesn't even want will come to you from the Federal coffers" payoff that we, as taxpayers, will foot.

Blasphemy!!!

The totals change significantly if you extend the time frame by a few years. HILLPAC also gave Obama $10,000 and Hope Fund gave Hillary $4,200...clearly attempting to buy votes.

That is alot of cash for a freshman senator to be doling out since 2005! ????

How was this guy raising all this money? Is he just buying votes? If so then it supports my theory that he is another Dem pretty boy wolf in sheeps costume.

Check Open Secrets for individual donors over $200 or the FEC documents for more details. Leadership PACs are commonly used to support other campaigns regardless of presidential ambitions.

think for a minute people...these are campain donations.....obama and hillary where not running for president in 2005....all dems and repubs contribute money to there respective party's people that run for a public office...it's called building your party...the more people from your party that win public offices the stronger your party will be...so please people stop making things up...the repubs are going down, there time is up, it's over for them

They very well might win. All logic says they should win. They economy is heading South, we're in Iraq with no foreseeable withdrawal. You are correct, by all logic the Dems should win...

However, you've got to keep in mind this nagging problem for the Dems. If George W. Bush could beat the Dems TWICE, twice mind you, what makes you so certain that the Dems won't snatch defeat from the Jaws of victory yet again. They seem to have a tremendous capacity for screwing up what should be certain victory. Keep in mind, they've still got one of the greatest political self-immolators of all time, as the party chairman. Howard Dean has a tremendous capacity to create quite a bit of party destruction.

Long held to be the ace up Clinton's sleeve, the super delegates may be jumping ship. Just how many will go for Obama isn't clear yet.

With Superdelegates in Doubt, Clinton’s Options Could Be Spreading Thin
by FOXNews.com

Hillary Clinton is pursuing several paths to prevent her slip in the delegate count from becoming a free fall, but with reports surfacing that her long-loyal superdelegates are flirting with Barack Obama’s candidacy, the New York senator’s options are spreading thin.

As recently as Thursday, superdelegate John Lewis, a Georgia congressman and black leader from the civil rights era, was reconsidering his support for Clinton.

The New York Times reported Friday that Lewis planned to jump ship for Obama, citing a “sense of movement and a sense of spirit” in recent days. His Atlanta-area district voted 3-to-1 for Obama. A spokesman for Lewis told FOX News that Lewis has not yet made a final decision where he will throw his support, but that he is reconsidering his Clinton loyalty. Such a defection would signal an erosion of support Clinton was depending on.
