know what to expect regarding general anesthesia. Lil spooked since this will be my first experience regarding any sort of surgery.

Procedure, doc said, will be 30 min tops ( not doing grafting or major suturing ) - my tendon has actually begun mending on own, but he felt a "defect" where the mending is and wants to be sure both ends are matching up properly. He also wants to be sure that its not scar tissue taking up where ligament should be ( reduces tendon strength and increases re-rupture chances ) So basically he is doing a 2 inch cut and putting a few sutures in the mend to make sure the ends are lined up properly.

Anyone ever had this done? Or general anesthesia for that little of time?

I attempted to offer to numb my leg from knee down, but he said no go. too many nerves in the area and if I move while he is in there, could damage them.

Suck it up wuss, you'll be fine :)

Honestly I'd take general over epidural every time, that stuff freaks me out. Have had many knee surgeries, from very minor to very major. Shortest was about 45 minutes just to clear out scar tissue. Got general anesthesia for all of them.

What happened to your achilles? I'm getting mine MRI'd on sat, doc says its insertional achilles tendinathopy with maybe some small tears. I may have to get it operated on since physical therapy isn't working.

You'll be fine. You're knocked out and immediately wake up. That's it. Where are you getting the procedure done?

I ruptured it 2 weeks ago playing soccer.

I had injured it the week prior in game. Just figured it was tendonitis and that i could play thru it the next week. I was wrong. So very wrong. Doc said I probably had a minor tear and when I planted to take off, it completed the tear.

Ive never had an issue with knees/ankle over the 30 years ive played. So this was quite a shock. No pain. no soreness ( im guessing that will change in the next few days ). But I want piece of mind when i enter PT that I know the tendon is fully connected.

I think sometimes people don't wake up and die. I had GA for an endoscopy and wisdom teeth removal; I woke up both times.

I don't think that is helping the OP. I have had surgeries many times and would choose general over localized 10 out of 10 times.

Sorry man, I was just busting your chops. I was nervous getting having GA and reading and researching the internet just spooked me out even more. I guess that is what I was trying to get at - don't read the internet - you'll be A-okay.

yeah its all good :ezbill:

I specifically stayed away from googlin "general anesthesia" for that very reason. Im just trying to calm my nerves a bit since this will be my first ever time under general. No teeth pulled, no other procedures that ever required general.

I come from a soccer playing family and I've seen my dad and uncles continue to play into their middle years and they all ended up hurt - broken ribs, all kinds of lower leg injuries, you name it.

I guess there is nothing wrong with being hurt - but being old and hurt sucks. My old man was like 45 years old when he broke some ribs playing a pick up game at Lafreniere - that poor man was in pain for a bit. He hung it up after that.

Well i still lament over the fact that i didnt listen to my body when i could barely walk the week after first injuring it. But because our season is so short, and we were undefeated, i figured i could "work thru" the pain. Unfortunately for me, as my Ortho explained, this was a tendon, not muscle.

And he told me, when your age begins with the number "4", you begin to lose strength, elasticity in tendons/ligaments.

I dont know that i am ready to give it up...i do know that if i play again, i will certainly pay attention to soreness and dial it back a bit.

My wife puts people to sleep for a living. They always wake up. :) If you aren't otherwise sick, old, and frail, you won't have any troubles.

i played league last year until i ruptured my plantar fascia - a few weeks ago playing old man pick up game, i thought for sure i tore my calf muscle
- now it feels heeled and guess which dumb *** is going back out this sunday?

it sucks- we can't train for this anymore- there's one day to go out and run around for 2 hours pretending we're still 20. of course we're going to get hurt
but the alternative is not appealing either:aargh:

thanks!

and she's compensated quite well....my word, the anesthesiologist charge is almost 75% of the surgeons charge. But, hey when i wake up, i will pen the check myself.

funny...i had a convo with a friend who i played with growing up the day i ruptured it. I was explaining to him that while my brain was operating at 100% ( seeing passes, runs, space , shots etc ) i noticed a slight delay between my brain thinkin and telling my legs to do and it actually happening. It was maddening. I was slowly getting accustomed to this minimal delay, then this. He knew about the week before injury and i had told him that we have 2 games left and in a joking manner i told him "i aint goin out like no sucka".

well, yes i did.

Self-fulfilling prophecy.
