I was listening to this fantasy podcast where they invited a doctor to comment on Roethlisberger and Brees injuries... You can listen to the Brees part from 3:45 onwards

Takeaways
1. Recovery time is faster with surgery (over under is 6 weeks) vs 10-12 weeks otherwise
2. This is a reliable/predictable injury in terms of recovery time.
3. The recovery from this surgery is very very "routine" since it follows an expected timeline... few things to complicate it.

The details of Drew’s injury are all speculation at this point. They haven’t revealed if it’s a fully torn ligament or not, so this guy is basing his opinion solely on what he saw on tv
He seems to be favoring surgery if its a torn ligament. Since Xrays were clean, there is no broken bone. Maybe MRI may reveal the extent of damage but it points to ligament damage and not broken bone.

For all we know it's a badly bruised ligament so 2-3 weeks tops.

Consider that they actually showed the exam on TV, that is very unlikely. I hope that Drew doesn’t get talked into PRP/stem cells. Surgery is very likely the fastest route to recovery. And honestly, I was excited to hear 6 weeks...that was best case scenario in my mind.

Last I read, they did the X-ray right after the game, but they never revealed what it said. Did you hear that the X-ray was clean?

But yea until he gets his MRI and ultrasound on the thumb and reveals the results, all this time-table mess is speculation.

Everything that has been said on Twitter is just the common treatment and recovery time for the assumed injury

The docs knew it was an UCL tear on the sidelines. The MRI/ultrasound isn’t needed to make that diagnosis. The MRI is done to rule out conditions you don’t know about, such as other ligament tears, fractures, or Stener lesions. Think of it as 6 weeks minimum and anything else other that UCL injury adds addition time. The 6 week timeline likely means Brees has a clean, isolated complete UCL tear.

Will he really be able to grip and throw after just six weeks? Is that a safe time period or is it pushing it?

I was listening to a hand and wrist doctor on local radio (Baton Rouge). He said he could probably be doing light throwing after 4 weeks. Without complications, he should be full go in 6 weeks. He said 8 weeks max if there are issues. Pretty much the same I've been hearing everywhere.

There are good surgeons that are having that turn around time. Brees fortunately has the ability to get the best Ortho hand surgeon. There’s a ton riding on this case, so you better believe it’ll be done well.

I recall Brees saying that in his post game press conf... that Xray was done at the stadium and was clean

On ok. I didn’t catch that one. Here’s a quote from the article I read

“Brees said he had X-rays at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, but did not want to say anything until after meeting with the hand specialist, which was expected to happen Sunday night. New Orleans is staying on the West Coast with a game at Seattle next Sunday”

i think he is just getting s second opinion for the sake of it

brees isnt dumb so i dont see drew risking the whole season by not having surgery and hoping it heals itself (which is what the second opinion alternative is all about)

at least the same and most opinions say would take longer to heal and the odds it doesnt completely heal are very high so if he went with that he might be able to grip the ball but have weak grip strength and poor accuracy the rest of the year and may still need surgery after the season any way

No confirmation from Saints it’s torn yet
so we wait. I thought Payton sounded cautiously optimistic so who knows.

Since there is zero chance he plays against Seattle I hope he is already on a plane to Birmingham to consult with Dr. James Andrews.
