Goes to Ohio State, switches to WR, becomes their primary kick off/punt returner, and is MUST SEE TV, setting Big 10 records for most punt returned Touchdowns in conference history.
Ted Ginn Jr. helps lead Ohio State to the 2007 BCS National Championship Game where he returns the opening kick off 92 yards for a touchdown.
Sadly, a teammate rolled into Ginn's foot after the TD, giving him a game ending injury. The Buckeyes would go on to lose.
The 2007 NFL draft is mostly remembered for the bust that was JaMarcus Russell, but that draft actually had an insane amount of talent. Future Hall of Famers such as Megatron, Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Marshawn Lynch, Joe Thomas, Greg Olsen, Darrell Revis, and many, many more impressive names.
With the 9th pick in the 1st round, the Miami Dolphins selected Ted Ginn Jr. under much scrutiny from fans and analysts alike, believing that the 'Phins should have addressed their dreadful QB situation and taken Brady Quinn at that spot.
Ginn would only last 3 years in Miami. A lot of people would consider him a bust, despite a few bright moments and the fact that he was the one guy who could consistently shred Darrell Revis.
But this is where his career becomes really crazy, guys.
Ginn goes to San Francisco for 3 years and becomes their primary punt returner. He contributes at wide receiver as well, but returning kicks is where he shines most during his tenure there.
In the Divisional round of the 2011 playoffs against our precious New Orleans Saints (a loss that still pains me to this day), Ginn was injured during a kick return that took him out of the playoffs. The following week in the NFC Championship, the 49ers would lose largely because of Ginn's replacement, Kyle Williams, 2 fumbles during punt returns, including one in overtime that led to New York Giants game winning Field Goal.
Yet another potential championship lost because of a Ted Ginn injury.
The following season, Ginn would contribute to the 49ers making it to the Super Bowl in a losing effort against the Baltimore Ravens.
After the Super Bowl loss, Ginn would go to Carolina for a season and have one of his best seasons to date in the receiving department, which ultimately led him to getting a very nice contract in Arizona, where he wasn't properly used and cut after one season.
So back to Carolina he went, after the Panthers bewilderingly let go of their greatest wide receiver in franchise history, Steve Smith Sr. However, Ginn stepped up to the plate and became Cam's favorite WR target in a season in which the Panthers went 15-1 and made it to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Denver Broncos. Another missed Super Bowl for Ginn.
After Ginn had another good year in Carolina, the Saints traded Brandin Cooks and decided to pick up Ted Ginn Jr. as his replacement.
Ginn contributed tremendously his first year, becoming the most reliable deep threat on the team and a true team first guy and leader to a squad that drafts a LOT of Buckeyes who all look up to him.
Of course, we know how Ginn's two seasons have ended here so far. Heartbreaker in Minnesota. Heartbreaker against the Rams, where Ginn actually caught the deep ball that put us in position to be screwed over to begin with.
If you're keeping count, that's FIVE Super Bowls and 1 National Championship Ginn has come close to winning. How wild is that? Can you think of a player who's had more devastating losses in their career?
Listen, we all want Brees and Payton to get their 2nd Super Bowl Title, they deserve it. But let's also keep in mind the unbelievable heartbreak Ginn has suffered throughout his career, and let's root for him to finally grab that ring he so deserves.
Who else from that 2007 NFL Draft had 100 hundred yards week 1? The answer is NO ONE! All Ginn needs is a Super Bowl ring to classify him as the MVP of that draft class as far as I'm concerned. Let's get it!!!!!
