His last contracts he took less but until then he got top QB money which would have been 35-40 mil with the current pay scale for QBs.

He hasn’t gotten top QB money since his second contract in 2012. I’ll just compare his last two to Kirk cousins…In 2018 Drew signed 2/50 25mil/yr cousins signed 3/84, 28mil/yr. Then in 2020 Drew signs another 2/50 and cousins signs 2/66.

In 2019 all of this happened
Goff signed 4/134 33m/yr
wentz signed 4/128 32mil/yr
Wilson signed 4/140 35mil/yr

Watson and Mahomes happened in 2020 with their 35 and 45mil/yr contracts when Drew signed his last 25mil/yr contract. That’s the most we ever paid him. He has been taking less for awhile.

We're saying the same thing, as of 2018 he was on retirement watch (3 years ago). His initial contract was big and the contract in 2012 was market value as well.

In 2018 and 2020 he signed below market value contracts is what I'm saying. He gave up 5-10mil/yr his last three seasons is what I'm saying. As long as you're saying that, we're saying the same thing.

Oh yeah?!?

And that's what I was wondering. He could have had players open all day long, but if he's got no time to throw it then that's part of the problem. What kind of routes were they running, were any of the receivers running blitz beaters, was Winston properly identifying where the blitzes were coming from, was Payton calling plays to combat the blitz? Tons of unanswered questions and no easy answers.

Those Brees numbers were salary cap juggling by Loomis, not Brees taking less money. we just worked out numbers and bonus money to be able to pay him later while still paying him what he was worth. If fact we are still paying him. Him waiting until a certain date to retire helped up push some of that payment further down the line.

The numbers I posted are the actual contract numbers. Not the cap numbers.

He never made more than an average of 25 million a year.
and how much is he making this year and next from the saints? If we still paying the man... he made more then 25 million a year. The contracts are just set up in a way that allows us to borrow from future years cap space. It's accounting 101 these days.

Edit: The answer Brees counts as 11.5 million against the cap this season and another 11.5 million against the 2022 cap.

This also is for people talking about how Brady took "less money" he didn't. He will also get his payout after he retires.

That’s due to all of the “loomising” we did to make cap space in past years.

His average salary 2012-2016 was 20’mil/yr. here are the cap numbers:

2012: 10.4
2013: 17.4
2014: 18.4
2015: 23.8
2016: 17.25

His avg salary 2017-2020 was 25mil/yr. here are his cap numbers

2017: 19
2018: 24
2019: 22.7

For salary cap purposes we’re still paying for those years now. And if we give Jameis a big contract next year, we’ll be doing the same thing after he’s gone. Because we don’t have the money to pay a qb 30mil without backloading it to future years. Then when those years come we’ll create void years to push it back beyond the length of the contract.

It’s the same thing we did with TQS this week. This is the last year of his contract but he’s going to count on our cap for a couple years now.

you're missing the 2020, 2021 and 2022 cap numbers. Is 2022 the end?

2020: was 23.65 still below his 25 mil. The reason he still counts against the cap now is because his cap number was below his salary in other years. We borrowed salary cap space from this year for past years.

If you add up the cap numbers from his 5/100 contract it only comes to 87. If you add up the 4/100 years it only comes to about 89. That 24 mil that is missing is what’s counting against our cap now.
