The best thing about today.......

is that Garrett Hartley walks back into the facility today. We win the Buffalo game probably 34-7 and we win yesterday probably 30-10 with him.

The last two weeks have been horrible as far as how many times we have passed on FG attempts because they don't trust Carney more than 40 yards out.

I don't necessarily want to see Carney go, but I don't know why he stays. Morstead is playing well and is kicking off well also.

This said, the offense has got to do a better job scoring touchdowns down close....first and goal from the 1 is inexcusable.

I couldn't agree with you more. Carney is a fantastic hall of fame kicker. He is a great Saint and all, but he has no range, he can't even kick a 38 yarder. What happens when we go to the SB and we need a 47 yarder to win the game or go into overtime, and we have to go for it because Carney's leg is older than my whole body!! hahaha.

He is amazing, but Hartley has a HUGE leg, and has range in the 48-54 range. Could even get a longer one if needed.

GO HARTLEY!

i thought the same thing but yesterday i read that SP is going for it on 4th down not because of no faith in kicker but faith in his defense.

I'm very anxious to see what they do with the kicking situation during the bye. I have a feeling they'll roll with what we have now.

The only thing I worry about is needing a long kick at the end of a game. I'm not too bothered with having to punt the ball from their 40-45 anymore. I don't mind the defense defending 90 yards like I used to.

I agree, I totally respect what Carney has accomplished in the league but we are very fortunate that he didn't hurt us very much in the first four games.

It sounds like we are going to keep Carney around a little while longer, most likely to evaluate Hartley in practice--but I think we will be a better team when we can start kicking some FG's in the 42-52 yard range.

Hartley was making extra points an adventure in preseason. He wsas not consistant at all in practice or in preseason like he was last year. Be careful what you wish for.

only partly agree with this... if he had no faith in his D, he would have gone for the long FG with Morestead probably. Still wouldnt have had faith in Carney to kick a 45 yarder.

It is far more substantial what Hartley proved last season during actual games.

If you have faith in your defense then put 3 points on the board and let your defense do their thing. I am obviously not talking about the goal line thing, that he did go for because of the defense.

I am talking about the three or four times we have gone on fourth down in the last two weeks where it would have been between 40-50 yard FG's.

Like I said, I don't have an issue at all if the Saints can make room to keep them both. However, like others have said....you have to have a guy in this league that you can at least let try 40-55 yard FG's.

What if we have 1 second left in a game and a 53 yard FG possibility. We can't always go for it.

here's what SP is working with - the memory of billly cundiff's miss in the nfc championship, then letting carney go only to watch gramatica and mare tear his heart out on what must have felt like a weekly basis
but i agree that SP has gone for it on 4th more than he'd like and would have preferred the points
so how can he cut carney again? but how can he not bring hartley back

i get this *ugh* feeling that one of these guys will be kicking against us this year

I do have a question about this, and it really does need to be asked. (Disregarding that you're doing nothing more with this thread than starting another silly slap fight, and you KNOW this...)

Does winning those games by any stretch of a different margin really make any difference whatsoever? You can't count the "what if we're in the last second, etc etc" argument, because it's not part of the question. On those 2 games, which you specifically mentioned, did it matter a hill of beans about an extra 3 or 6 points?

Yes or no question.

Isn't Chase Daniels on the active roster right now? Why don't we practice-squad Daniels and keep two kickers? We need two kickers a lot more than we need three QBs, based on recent history. Let Carney kick them 40 and in, give Hartley the long ones, let Morestead continue kickoffs ... at least until we're sure that Hartley has recovered from his pre-season case of the yips. Next year, Hartley gets the whole deal. And Carney retires a Saint with his Super Bowl ring.
