The Chaos and Changes Created by the Coronvirus in the Draft in Real-Time (1 Viewer)

You did on this post - lol. Coach Pete's name seems to create severe unhappiness, pain, suffering, anger and even clinical depression to a small percentage of SR members. During these brutal times of the virus, I want to express my caring for all those having an extra special hard time and don't want to increase their fear and unhappiness with Coach Pete threads. And Pete doesn't want anymore official "Coach Pete" threads on SR.

He told me 2x more stories than I shared here, most really funny about the draft.

There were a lot of F-bombs being dropped by GMs and HCs during the entire draft. Another story was that the non tech-savvy HCs and GMs, and even many of those who had little experience with video conferencing software, occasionally or often not sure when they were only on Zoom with their draft team or when they were actually on air. Apparently there were numerous incidents where HCs are GMs were texting, "Are we freakin on TV or is this still private to us? Can I speak my feakin mind clearly without Gruden hearing who we want?"

There were rumors that the networks were delaying the national feedback of teams for 3-5 seconds because of the level of cursing from uncertainty by the teams if they were on air or not. For those of you in TV media, is this even possible to temporarily delay a live broadcast?

Yes it is possible for a loop delay.
In every local broadcast we normally would have, what is called a loop delay, up to 7 second delays.

I don't hate Swimmer at all. He and I have shared some really nice personal messages.

She really did and I was moved by it. It seems to me that if something does not make clear sense to FL, if she's interested, she will drill down to get clarification. Her PM to me was awesome.

Lmao - I would not want to get in a debate with her about something she beleives in. I would concede before it starts - lol

I don’t believe it’s a coincidence that this thread pops up ~4 months after the Burrow thread made its debut, so I fully expect another thread near the start of September when that meter goes dry again and needs to be replenished.

Alan, you are one of the superior intellects I was referring to in this post. I hate to insult your superior intelligence.

Umm, what? Gruden hasn’t been an analyst on a NFL Draft broadcast since 2017. How would he hear who “Team X” wanted when he was at his own house dealing with his own draft and Zoom conferences?

Were they talking about Jon or Jay? I don't know. Just repeating what I was told. Again, your superior intellect sees far beyond us normal fans. You live it thin air. It must be cool

Not to mention when teams were on the clock and the broadcast was showing their HC/GM, the feeds had no audio and were being broadcast as video-only. The only time there was audio and video from coaches/general managers was when the broadcast team was interviewing them, not while they were making picks or discussing strategy.

Again, I'm just so blown away with your brilliance. Actually so much more so than the GMs and Coaches who had never used video conferencing software in real life. I've run software companies for 30 years and been using video conferencing software for 15 plus. And for those of us with not your level of genius, we still have CFOs, CEOs and COOs of big companies, some tech, who don't know how to login to a web conference, don't know if they are muted and don't know if anyone can hear them.

There are no rumors about that whatsoever, anybody that watched the Draft with any level of attentiveness could see there was a clear ~10 second+ broadcast delay. All you had to do was wait for a feed with a television visible in the background with the Draft broadcast on and you could see it wasn’t “live” with zero latency.

Nearly every “live” feed of a television broadcast is on a broadcast delay, especially after the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show.

Again, all I can do is bow to your brilliance. I thought most live TV was delayed a few seconds, but I did not know for sure if all live events were delayed

And I can't tell you how much I appreciate you being the protector of the board. You are such a noble guy. I deeply respect your position of protecting the 5% to 10% of the board who found those threads caused them deep unhappiness while being so addicted to the threads that they couldn't help going to those threads repeatedly. Thanks for helping them with their addictions. And I'm sure the other 90% of the board who read those threads so frequently and enjoyed them, in retro really appreciated you enlightening them to the stupidity of their ways.

Of the 13 raters of this thread, 12 like or loved it and one did not. Again, thanks for helping the 12 who were misguided to the point they enjoyed this. You are real warrior for the uniformed. Thank you again

And you are kinda right. There's a real good chance, there will be more of those threads, but likely before you are thinking

Stay safe. That virus can be dangerous.

btw: Thanks to you and your dedicated drive to protect the inferior intellectuals of the board like me, I won't share the latest update on Marcus Davenport we received from one of his former coaches and best friends. I don't want to insult you since I'm sure you already know. Why don't you share that info with the board

Hey Allen - I enjoy the majority of your posts. You are a die hard Saints fan. This stuff is all fun. Take care and be safe Bro!

I just talked to someone who knows front office personnel and coaches on a bunch of teams. He said the virus created unprecedented Chaos before and during the draft. Here's how he summed it up:

-Not being able to fly out and view team workouts of players of interest negatively impacted scouts and coaches' ability to assess players to the depth they like to double-check: speed, directional change, attitude on field etc....
- Not being able to fly players in to team headquarters for extensive interviews had the same impact as the above bullet and for teams who have a very defined culture and who highly value team culture. This really impacted teams' ability to evaluate fit.
- Not knowing if there will be a season had most teams front offices creating multiple models including financial impact analysis based on guessed scenarios: no season, season but no or limited fans, partial seasons with no or limited fans, if they have to pay players this season if they don't play, if they don't play, how will the NFL rule on final year of contracts, tagging and designations. This came into play for a number teams especially on the early round picks - assessment variables they rarely had to deal with on draft day before

In the virtual team War rooms during the draft, it was 2x to 3x the chaos of normal drafts that was only worse because of the virtual nature and few teams being able to get all the key decision-makers in a single room

Teams were flying around sometimes in like panic mode right before their pick when it became pretty clear which players would be options and frantically calling/Zooming scouts and coaches to check things like:

- "Did anybody really check out the reported off-field behavior issue?" One thing he heard was that a head coach said, "Our freaking head scout is in the toilet and we have to decide in 60 seconds. Tell him to piss in a freakin cup. We need his input now!" lol
- If so, or even if not, "Does anybody think this was a one-off mistake or part of the kids personality? How strongly do you feel about that?"
- "Was anyone able to double-check poor performance in one or more areas at the Combine where the player performed poorly or incredibly well? If not, what's our best team guess on that?"
- "Who checked-out how the player's teammates respected or not their team play, leadership and performance? If not, what's our best guess? Is anybody on the eval team willing to take a risk and vouch for this player?"
- "Did anybody talk to their parents. Will they be supportive or a problem?"
- "What do you mean we can't get in touch with our head scout who talked to that player. We pick in 2-minutes. Keep calling!" One coach said, "What do you mean Zoom just dropped him. What in the hell is Zoom! I don't care about Zoom. If I don't get his feedback in the next 30-seconds I'll zoom something up his arse if we make a mistake on this pick!" - lol

The end result is that teams' ability to evaluate players was severely hampered. This created fear to the coaches and front offices because of the level of risk, both in potential player performance and character. To teams drafting, the smart teams view every pick from a "Risk/Reward" basis. Based on much of the criteria and processes above. Ultimately, in most cases, this all made teams much more conservative than previous years trying to reduce risk more than value reward as they did at times in previous years.

In my friend's personal opinion, he thinks the teams that took very conservative approaches will be better off in the long run. And that a few teams, especially those loaded with draft picks that did not put much emphasis on risk, will get a few steals, but also a lot of mistakes.

And most of this was taking place in minutes and even seconds. Apparently it was 2x more adrenaline-pumping than any other previous draft and will take 2-3 years to see who played this Virus situation to their best advantage.

It's for this reason I only gave the Saints a C grade. There were just too many nuances due to the circumstances that didn't favor moving up and keying on players because of lacking data points. It's entirely possible outside of the Ruiz pick, that they traded up for all the wrong players. Everyone wants the cookie analysis that they did well and got value but value is when you get something you want for less.

They gave up to get Baun and Trautman who were sliding for reasons and while Ruiz was a great pick they also didn't get their man in Kenneth Murray. Add Payton moving up to select a QB just to spite the Panthers and this has the potential to be a 2014 level draft where you only get 1 legitimate player (Ruiz) and the rest don't get second contracts.

I applaud them on sticking to who they were but I also feel like the entire scenario was a cascading effect that resulted from them missing on Murray. This caused them to fall back into their usual way of doing things by targeting guys that they felt were of high value. Nothign wrong with that...during a normal draft...but this one in particular was anything but.

Do we know for sure that Murray was their man?

Pre-draft I get it...

Draft day?!?!? Should not have been a problem AT ALL!! EVERYTIME they showed a coach after the pick they all had the perfect home setup with multiple screens and monitors...much better setup than I have and I'm on zoom and teams video meetings all the time with multiple tens of folks.

I do not claim to have superior intellect, I’m just not gullible.

Were they talking about Jon or Jay? I don't know. Just repeating what I was told.
LMAO, what? Why would they be talking about Jay Gruden either? Jay Gruden doesn’t work for ESPN/NFL Network and is currently employed in Jacksonville as the offensive coordinator after getting fired by the Redskins 5 games into the 2019 season. He likely wasn’t even involved with the Jaguars’ virtual war room and even if he was, he still wouldn’t be able to be hearing what other teams are strategizing about as a member of the Jaguars.

Repeating what you’re told is fine, but whomever gave you that information, and specifically that particular quote, is entirely full of **** because there is 0.0% chance that these NFL executives aren’t aware that “Gruden” has returned to the NFL. They’re essentially a HC fraternity and are all more than aware about where each other have moved on to.

Again, I'm just so blown away with your brilliance. Actually so much more so than the GMs and Coaches who had never used video conferencing software in real life. I've run software companies for 30 years and been using video conferencing software for 15 plus. No brilliance required, just a functional set of eyes and an attention span longer than that of a goldfish to watch the Draft.

And I’m fairly confident the HC/GM’s didn’t need to know all the fine nuances of running video conferencing equipment or software because I’d bet that the NFL more than likely had their technicians at each remote location in the event of technical difficulties or just overall ignorance with the equipment. You don’t think that the NFL just sent them all the equipment and had them set it up themselves, do you? That would be a situation begging for a disaster.

I thought most live TV was delayed a few seconds, but I did not know for sure if all live events were delayed
Glad to help out.

I like to consider myself rather well-rounded in many things, but addiction is one field that’s definitely not in my wheelhouse so I’ll have to defer to the expert...

Ratings are irrelevant. Those posters are more than welcome to enjoy whatever they like. Some people like to exclusively read fiction novels. Adults still enjoy watching professional wrestling. Women everywhere still tune into soap operas every day. They can like what they like.

I may not tune in to those programs, but if I’m flipping channels and something catches my eye long enough to stop, I’ll more than likely get a few chuckles in at the expense of the outlandish acting and storytelling before going on with my day. Nothing different than with these threads.

And you are kinda right. There's a real good chance, there will be more of those threads, but likely before you are thinking
There was never a doubt in my mind. I know as long as that thirst persisted that threads like these are inevitable.

Stay safe. That virus can be dangerous.
Likewise.

I never claimed once to have any inside information because I don’t. I don’t need to make outlandish threads for e-clout.

The connection Pete apparently has with someone at UTSA is one of the few that genuinely seems credible (due to it’s proximity) and if you care to go through my posts you’d see that I haven’t doubted those relating to Davenport.

You’re more than welcome to post about Davenport if you want. Or withhold it if you don’t want to post it. Either way. I won’t lose sleep over it.
