Sticky Post
Hey, hey, hey, it’s that time, Saints fans. What guido calls the 4th (or possibly) 5th most wonderful time of the year. We just dropped from triple to double digits in the number of days before the season starts, and that means….wait for it….

THE COUNTDOWN!!!!

Here we go on our annual romp through the roster, counting down by jersey number the days until the first game of the Saints season. (Yes, I know the official season starts before the Saints first game this year. Friends of the Countdown can join this chorus: "We Don’t Care." First day of the season to us is Saints first game. Period. This is Countdown policy. Sticklers for technicalities, go be a lawyer.)

The last couple of years I’ve been on the road more and try to stay off strange WiFi. Which means I use my phone as a hotspot for my tablet. Not always the most reliable internet, even in big cities. So others on the board pitched in. Inside job was the first. Last year I threw doing the pics to the board. That led to the biggest improvement the Countdown has seen when SaintLuke took over the task. He’s got some real skills, and Luke has graciously agreed to be my partner again this year. I am so glad to have him. So a big thanks to Luke, who you will come to appreciate if you haven’t already.

We’ve got some really intriguing additions to this roster, and we are going to cover them one at a time. Before you know it (somewhere in the 50’s or 40’s) it’ll be training camp.

We have a rule here on the Countdown, and it’s one that I intend to enforce. We do not call players camp bodies. These are talented, trained athletes who are working hard and performing at a level that most of us can only ever dream about. And the fact that the Saints think they might play a role on the roster, that makes them our guys. And the ones who are not roster shoe-ins are pursuing a life long dream. We want them to succeed. Like remember a guy named Pierre Thomas? UDFA who beat out a fourth round RB for a roster spot, and proved forever that Sean Payton runs a meritocracy. Plus, the term is dismissive and therefore rude. We are not rude on saintsreport. Andrus set up a family atmosphere where we can disagree but do it in a respectful way. So you are not just free, but welcome to post your legitimate doubts or questions about any player. Just don’t call him a camp body. If you do, you will be asked point blank why you think so. And you will be shunned. You won’t feel it because it’s the internet, but you will still be shunned, and somehow you will not like it. I don’t know how that works. But it does. So play nice.

Now let’s start where we always do, with the big numbers and the big guys.

99 Geneo Grissom 6’ 4” 265 DE Oklahoma

We signed Grissom in the middle of May. He is reported to play all over the line. Our line, especially at DE is set, so it looks like Grissom will be using his versatility (which Payton loves) to make it onto the roster as rotational player on the line. Welcome to New Orleans, Geneo. Can’t wait for you to show us what you can do.

58 Porter Gustin 6’ 5” 260 OLB USC

Gustin is another guy we signed right after the draft, and he was praised as a good get for the team. Injury concerns likely kept him from being drafted, but he is performing well right now. He’s probably projected as a situation rusher either from the edge on the line or from an OLB spot. He’s athletic and really strong. He’s another good one to watch at training camp. He could definitely work his way into the rotation on D.

57 days . Right now number 57 is Carl Granderson from Wisconsin. Granderson was given a free agent contract despite a pending trial on sexual assault charges. That trial was this week. Granderson entered a plea to reduced charges. The plea deal would have meant no jail time. The two women who were the victims were upset with the reduced charges, and the judge in the case refused to go along with the no jail time, in part because Granderson showed no remorse. That's a sad state of affairs all the way around. I do hope the victims can continue with the healing process, and also that Granderson will get to a state of mind where he is able to feel remorse and begin to reform. No comment from the Saints yet, who say they did their own background and were comfortable with signing him. As of now he's still on the roster, but we are not going to feature him today.

Instead, Luke had the idea to look at players in the past who wore number 57, including one of the greatest Saints in history.

We have had a lot of players who have worn #57 for the SAINTS throught the years. They have ranged from guys we no longer remember to a Hall-of-Famer none of us will ever forget. I certainly couldn't name all these guys, but why not try your luck at it. See how many you can identify.

I didn't make it easy on a few of them at first, but lets see how the Who Dats do and then I will add clues and additional pics if needed.

I'll take a crack at it.
Player #1- David Hawthorne
Player #2- Colby Bockwolt
Player #3- Jason Kyle
Player #4- Jim Merlo
Player #5- Alex Okafor
Player #6- Mike Morgan
Player #7- Rickey Jackson

1,5 &7 were pretty easy, but the rest I had to do a little digging to find.
Great posts and pics by y'all on all the players in the count down. It really gives me something to do while I'm cooped up during this storm. Thanks to all.

I have a couple of books that list every player and their numbers from the beginning until 2001 and the rest I just kept up with in a notebook. I also collect Saints football cards, I have whole team sets from 1967 until now. I used the cards to find Jim Merlo & Mike Morgan.

I found the list up to 2009, then I had to look at each years teams roster from that point forward. I found some names I could not find pictures. Larry Coombs & Curtis Holden wore #57 in earlier years. Jason Trunsnick & Chris McCain wore that number too.

About 12 days ago I wanted to say how fast this list is moving by! I would have said that it had only felt like 2 weeks to me but now I'd say no more than 3 weeks ago we were on 99. I love this thread! Thank you @Saint Tex and @SaintLuke !

56 Demario Davis 6’ 2” 248 LB Arkansas State

We added Davis last year. He is really a great player for us-- and he seems to be getting better. He graded high in a bunch of categories that I don’t even keep up with. He just always seems to be in the right place. That’s something you can’t teach. And he’s got the chops to take advantage of it. Great skills, and he upgraded our D last year. Can’t wait to see him go at it again.

I have him down as one of my UDFAs to watch come TC. No doubt his injury history hurt him BADLY!

But again, here are some of his highlights:

And here are his Combine numbers:

You always “HOPE” a new player will be as good as advertised.

Demario Davis was simply BETTER than advertised!

He was the “total package” for us last year:

1st on the team in tackles (110), 3rd in TFL (11) 3rd on the team in sacks (5). He played surprisingly well in coverage too ( many thought that was his biggest “weakness”! ).

Smart, physical n athletic! And he did it all while playing a new position at WIL!

BALLER! :bowdown2:
